Can you carry two pistols with a CCW in Nevada?
But he passed away a few years ago and I wanted to make sure the laws hadn't changed. The statute covering concealed carry in Nevada is NRS 202.350. It says:
"A person applying for a [concealed-carry] permit may submit one application and obtain one permit to carry all handguns owned by the person. The person must not be required to list and identify on the application each handgun owned by the person. A permit is valid for any handgun which is owned or thereafter obtained by the person to whom the permit is issued."
There is language that restricts the type of firearm that may be carried concealed — only pistols (defined as any handgun that doesn't contain its ammunition in a revolving cylinder) and revolvers. You can open carry a long gun, but if you carry a loaded long gun (rifle or shotgun) concealed under your trench coat, it's a felony.
The statute also limits concealed carry to adults, requires completion of a course in firearm safety, and prohibits concealed carry in specific locations, like airports, as well as other restrictions and requirements. But nowhere in the statute does it limit concealed carry to a single gun. The only restriction is that any handguns you carry concealed must be legally owned by you.
But you know how it is — a statute can seem perfectly clear to a layman and then you find out that courts have interpreted the law completely differently. So I double-checked with the Second Amendment Gun Shop on North Rancho Drive in Las Vegas. They confirmed my information. You can carry as many of your legally-owned handguns as you want anytime on a concealed carry permit. You don't need to get or carry multiple permits to carry multiple guns concealed at one time.
Just be sure to carry your permit on you when you're carrying your handguns concealed.
Here's where Jackie takes over, with a deeper dive into the details.
Is your CCW issued by Nevada or from a state that's on Nevada's reciprocal list? If your permit is from a state other than Nevada, does it limit the number of weapons you may carry and/or are they permitted by description? Nevada might accept your out-of-state CCW, but your own State's limits on your CCW will be the determining factor of any law violation in Nevada.
Also remember that the key word here is "concealed." If any of your handguns are detectable, they're not considered concealed and are in violation of Nevada's conceal-carry laws.
Complicating matters slightly, Nevada also allows open carry of weapons without any type of permit required. However, if you're wearing, for example, a windbreaker, or raincoat, or even a long T-shirt that covers your open-carry weapon and don't possess a CCW, you'll be in violation of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. If you do have a CCW and any part of your weapon is visible, you'll be in violation of non-concealment.
Finally, unlike 12 states, Nevada doesn't have a "duty to inform" law, in which you have a legal duty to inform a police officer that you're are armed upon making contact. However, if asked if you're armed, you must answer truthfully.
