Question of the Day - 15 January 2022

Q:

Does QoD censor comments?

A:

Yes, we do. With an important qualification.

One definition of "censor" is "to examine (a book, movie, QoD comment) officially and suppress unacceptable parts of it."

We never suppress, correct, annotate, revise, or alter any comments in any way (unless requested by the submitter, which happens on occasion for various reasons).

If a comment contravenes our (admittedly tolerant, even indulgent) standards, we delete it forthwith.

Actually, we make it "inactive"; because of the way most websites are constructed, nothing gets deleted. It's taken down from public viewing, but remains in the content-management system. Keep that in mind the next time you're considering posting something you might later regret.

It's rare for us to deactivate a comment. For the most part, participants on our website are responsible, broad-minded, and charitable adults. But it does happen. That's why you might see subsequent comments that refer to one that's been taken down, which can be confusing (this happened recently). Now you know why.

    On January 3
QoD was about the Lotus restaurant. My body clock woke me up at 2 a.m. and I saw Kevin Lewis comment about Thai restaurants. I fell back asleep and when I woke up and checked for further comments Kevin’s original comment was gone and his new comment stated that he couldn’t understand why his original was gone. I thought it might be just another electronic mishap. Then I thought LVA might have deleted it for whatever reason. That’s why I asked this question. It’s good to know. Sometimes people get text cahones and need to be straightened out. I’ll go back to sleep now.

    Multi-card keno
Good question about censorship. Mine is related. I've submitted a very basic and relevant question twice, only to be ignored. Is there any advantage to playing multiple cards with a high degree of overlap among them in keno? So that when one hits big, there's a good chance others do too. Simple, straightforward and relevant for this audience...

  • Kevin Lewis Jan-15-2022
    It's in the Constitution
Article XXXVII: The right to recommend Thai restaurants shall not be abridged.

Commish, if you ask a question in the comments, somebody MIGHT answer it--but in general, a comment doesn't generate a further QoD (I imagine there's always quite a queue). To answer your question, no, there's no advantage--it makes no difference overall. Yes, when you hit, cards with "overlap" have a better chance of hitting as well, but the flip side of that is when you miss, your other cards will probably miss as well. No net positive or negative effect.

    QoD
Have to thank LVA for not censoring my comments . I guess because I just post truth and facts. They are frequently unrelated to topic but are truth. Very few sites do this. Thank you. Ex. I subscribe to a gambling site newsletter where I believe I have never posted. Recently get pop up saying malicious content has been associated with this IP address ????

    To Dr Jerry (and others)
I think you are not censored because LVA welcomes all thoughts and ideas and rather than deciding how much "off topic" the comments may be, they leave it to all of us readers to decide (either to ignore or post agreeing or disagreeing replies). LVA readers and commenters are a widely diverse group of people who like to gamble. That wide range of thought is always welcome, and mostly entertaining and quite often informative. That's why the QoD is so popular. It would be nice to know, however, if someone's comments were taken down and why. It would be another informative aspect of the QoD.

    Reason comments are deleted
It's almost 100% related to personal attacks, which, unfortunately, overlaps into comments that may be insulting. This is a tough one, because it gets into the realm of "political correctness." I'm not a big fan of over-the-top PC, but different things bother different people and we're sensitive to that. Otherwise, we bend over backward not to censor comments, including dissenting opinions.

Thanks for making it perfectly clear.

    A little life lesson
Nothing is true, there is only what you have chosen to believe.
You should investigate your beliefs to verify if they are worthy of your propagation of their falsehood.

    "Truth and facts"
In other words, "an opinion from my personal point of view".

(This is the truth and is a fact.)

    Zap the politics comments
I wouldn't mind if politics comments were deleted, stuff that blames or promotes one president or one political party for example. And posting crap about the Nevada or California governor. Give it a rest, that's not what this QoD is for. Those comments only divide people, they never serve a good purpose.

    @"Dr" Jerry
The main reason that your comments aren't censored is that anyone with a modicum of common sense can usually tell you're talking out of your aargh- I've run out of space
