We were at Caesars recently and went looking for Cleopatra's Barge. That casino is a rat maze and a half and we looked all over for Cleo to rub for luck, a tradition in our family for the last 50 years, but had no luck finding her. Did something happen to the barge and bar?
Alas, Cleo and her Barge have been ... disposed of.
The larger-than-life full-statue figurehead of a topless Cleopatra graced the bow of the Barge for more than 50 years, since both were put into place in 1970.
Cleopatra's Barge was a 180-seat bar and lounge with a small stage that hosted performers from Dionne Warwick to Wayne Newton and though we've heard the Rat Pack showed up on occasion, we've never confirmed it.
Wayne was the last performer to appear on that stage, starting his "Up Close and Personal" show in 2019. It lasted less than a year before the pandemic shutdown, after which Newton moved over to the Flamingo and the Barge's days were numbered.
Not only is yet another classic piece of Vegas history relegated to the past (we tried to find out where Cleo wound up, but had no luck ourselves), but we're sure most of you will be overjoyed to hear that it's being replaced this spring with an "opulent new showpiece, Caspian's Caviar and Cocktails," in the press release's description.
Better yet, it's operated by Clique Hospitality, which also runs the Barbershop speakeasy at Cosmopolitan and Easy’s Cocktail Lounge at Aria, so Caspian's will host yet another hidden bar with prices so high that the last thing you'll want to do is find it.
