Question of the Day - 22 February 2019

Q:

What can you tell us about these 4.7% CNF fees, that restaurants are adding on our bills?

A:

CNF stands for “concession and franchise fee.” Think of it as a resort fee for bars and restaurants.

One difference is, with resort fees, you ostensibly receive something in return, no matter how dubious. With CNFs, you don’t get anything. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Zilch. The CNF is supposedly related to fees that the casinos collect from the restaurant concessions, a surcharge for a restaurant’s prime location.

Another difference is that in this day and age, you’re mostly adequately warned about resort fees, while restaurants that tack CNFs onto your tab usually mention them in the fine print, right under the warning about eating undercooked food.

These fees have been around Las Vegas for several years; the first time we heard about it was in 2012 at the Sugar Factory at Paris (since closed and reopened at the Miracle Mile Shops and Fashion Show Mall).

From what we’ve heard since, because they’re nothing less than a devious way of tacking an extra 5% or so onto your restaurant or bar bill, if you notice it and make a fuss, it’s often removed, but not always. It seems to us that restaurants that charge the fee are counting on patrons not noticing it and if they do, it’s negotiable.

Does that make it even more insidious? You make the call.

Either way, it’s always wise to read the menu carefully. If you see the intials CNF in the fine print, you might want to ask in advance if it’ll be waived. If not, you can always vote with your feet, loudly, by stomping out and letting everyone in earshot know why.

    CNFs
If the fee is not waived, I would reduce the tip by an equal amount of the fee...and let the server know why.

  • Adam Feb-22-2019
    The Server Know Why?
Right. Because the server put that CNF on your bill. Not the soulless corporations that control the Strip.

    my strategy
I learned to ask for the manager when food isn't right. Does no good just to walk.

Whether it would solve anything, I would ask to speak with the manager and lodge my complaint about the fee right then at table side. Then walk if it fits the situation. If other diners hear the exchange, even better.

Punishing the server by reducing a tip, is a jerky (and ineffective in most situations) thing to do, IMO.

    list
Wouldn't this be a good time to start compiling a list of establishments that add this CNF?
I know it might be a daunting task, but it would add vale to an already valuable organization.

    PASS
I think it is time to give Vegas a pass, getting way to expensive, a good recession will straighten things out, remember 2008

    Fee
I agree with Steve, a list of places would be great, if possible to compile. Something else to nickel and dime the travelers for. I'll still vacation in Vegas every year, just be aware of the "fee"...

    My CNF solution
The last time I was in Vegas I asked to see the restaurant manager with my waiter. I gave him the choice of removing the fee or no tip for my servers. He promptly removed the fee. I was bluffing of course, but the manager didn't know that.

    Vegas-relevance
Vegas is pricing themselves out of relevance.
I can now gamble in almost any state or Canadian province.
In Canada gambling/lotto winnings are not taxed.
Why do I need to come to Vegas ?
    Sports betting is opening up....

They should be doing as many attractors as possible to get me in the door but when my room comps come with a $50/night resort fee I am heavily disenchanted

I used to come to Vegas and rent a car through Priceline at 9.99/day even if I only used it to get to from the airport to the hotel and back then it was worth it vs taking the shuttle. I haven’t seen a 9.99 deal now in 8 yrs and the parking fees have eliminated any incentive to rent a car. This usually mean that any shopping trips to the outlying malls or even the outlets is. Getting curtailed.
I used to walk down the strip and get my 1.99 steal and eggs breakfast and then kick myself when I saw that the next casino was offering it at 1.88. $40 these days for breakfast + CNFs is just more magic.

    sad but inevitible
Nobody will stay where there are resort fees so they'll have to go back (No, just the opposite, they all do it). Nobody will go there because of parking fees (No, more and more are charging). So I can't see places backing down. I envision more and more adding this charge. Whatever rebellion there is to Vegas charges is more talk than action.

    Let's help
I agree with Steve/Annie. I think a list should be compiled. But let's help. Since we the members are out and about more as a group than LVA we could just e-mail a list to LVA after we come across a restaurant that is irresponsible enough to tack it on without advising the customer before ordering. Also let all of us know if it was removed after complaining. This way LVA is not portrayed as the one seeking out the establishments just reporting what members have come across( don't want to loose a good Members Reward coupon if they get upset).

  • Deke Castleman Feb-22-2019
Thank you, Mark, Dave in Seattle, and everyone
We'd love to hear when one of youse stumbles across a CFN. Indeed, we love to hear when you stumble across ANYTHING you think might pique our interest. It's true that our manpower is somewhat limited and we've always relied on the experiences and observations of LVA readers to inform us of things we might not already know.

As for losing a coupon, don't worry about it. As the Consumer Reports for Vegas, we always calls it as we sees it and damn the potential consequences.

Hexx and Beer Park at Paris have tacked on CNFs for years, and according to a Scott Roeben tweet last May, so do Alexxa (Paris), Cabo Wabo (Planet Hollywood), Rhumbar (Mirage), and Chayo Mexican at the LINQ -- all Caesars properties except Rhumbar.

We didn't publish them in today's answer, because we couldn't verify by phone or visit them personally. I'm saying that you might find them there -- and if you do, we'd love to hear it, plus any result from trying to get out of it.

    Forum Thread
Is this something we could do in the Forum as it might be fluid. Every now and then either the staff or one of us would create a full new list. Might even draw more people into the forum

    Good and Bad
On the positive side is the food deals from the MRB are even more valuable savings if the casinos are charging yet more fees for profit. It also makes any comped meal that much more valuable since the fee would not be charged because the tip is usually the only amount you’re responsible for on a comped meal.

Look, I am in retail business, but I find these fees dishonest, misleading, and yes, devious. It' simply a way to pad the bill. And don't penalize the hard working employee who lives on tips, they hate the CNF too, because they are the ones that get the brunt of the anger. If Congress had any guts and really cared about the consumer, they would either outlaw or at least require the fee to be in bold letters and be optional to the customer.

    Vegas thieving "fees"
Vegas thieving "fees"-1). rip off "resort" fees,2).early check-in fees,3).CNF fees,4).charging rip off "resort" fees for COMPED rooms,5). Parking fees,6).rental car pricing having 50%+ taxes added to rental fee. Don't forget 6/5 blackjack and the removal of playable video poker. In return, the casinos expect the visitor to compensate the low wages they pay by shaming us to tip. Most Vegas employees are underpaid and overworked - and the bean counters could not care any less. As long as 40+ million visitors keep coming to Vegas and paying these ever escalating fees, the fees will continue, with more asinine "fees" to be dreamed up and implemented.

    Rip City strikes again!
When I wrote in my blog about casinos charging resort fees to use their bathrooms, everyone thought I was being humorous. I was actually being prophetic.

What a stinking ripoff Vegas has become!

    OH NO NOT ANOTHER FEE
Vegas seems to come up with more fees everyday these days. It will reach a point when people decide not to go to Vegas since there are other casinos across the country who offer better deals than Vegas.

    FEES AND ANGER
Look, i get that a lot of you are upset but i find it interesting that some are saying they wont be back. Who are the casino's that are initiating all of this? except for resort fees at Downtown and Locals casinos, it is all the strip. Parking, exhorbitant food and drinks, CNF'S.....Just boycott the strip for gods sake. i am heading out this coming Thur thru Friday to stay at El Cortez for 3 nights then Palace station in a suite the last night. $120 total for all 4 nights including $65 in food and $25 in gambling and i am not a high roller...at all. i do get on runs on the blackjack table and progressive bet and the offers come rolling in...comped rooms including resort fees at El Cortez. LVA coupons all over the place downtown (i almost never pay more than half price for a meal when i go). Palace we are trying but we got a great rate for a suite and it included $40 in food and i have my LVA coupons. so what i am saying, dont boycott Vegas, just be smarter about where you stay.
