Does it seem to you at LVA that the negativity in the comments about more and more Questions of The Day has not only been increasing lately but getting more critical? And cynical? It's almost like the complainers expect you to cater to their individual tastes and interests in every Question and when you don't, boy do they let everyone know about it. It's disheartening to my husband and I, who don't usually comment, but have felt compelled to respond to some of the complainers on occasion. And if it's demoralizing to us, we can only imagine how it makes you feel, given all the energy we're sure it takes to produce a new answer every single day of the year, year after year.
Thank you for your concern and we certainly appreciate your efforts in trying to counteract the negativity that does, indeed, show up from time to time in the QoD comments.
But here's how we see it.
It's certainly true that, as the 15th century poet and monk John Lydgate is credited as saying (later adapted by Abraham Lincoln), “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time."
So we have no illusions about pleasing all of our readers all of the time, which is the main reason we don't take personally whatever criticism and cynicism might show up in the comments about a QoD.
Also, we're well aware of the ways in which social media enables people to belittle, berate, and bully, not only anonymously (i.e., no real consequences to the belittler), but also on such a grand scale that it can sometimes lead to depression and even, in extreme cases, suicide. And the pandemic and social isolation have intensified the tendency in people who are susceptible to negative momentum and seem to want to vent their spleens and, again in extreme cases, spew their venom, in public via anonymous forums.
But frankly, those people are few and far between and, for the most part, they're not so anonymous to us. So we can take the philosophical view toward their "contributions." And at the very least, they often trigger positive feedback that neutralizes the deprecation or at least stimulates more discussion in the comments, which we never fail to appreciate.
And compared to other social media we read and hear about, Question of the Day without a doubt falls onto the mild side of the ridicule-and-scorn meter, which is a testament to the maturity and forbearance of the vast majority of its readers and respondents.
Any other way of looking at this would, as you astutely observe, be demoralizing. Especially when you consider that Question of the Day is a free feature, available to all of the people all of the time, which we've never been able to monetize with advertising or sponsorship. One would think that some casino or gambling-industry business somewhere sometime would want to have a presence here, the most popular page on the most popular Las Vegas website, but none ever has -- and it hasn't been for the lack of decades of trying.
So we simply soldier on, doing our best to please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time.
