Question of the Day - 07 June 2020

Q:

When this is all over and we come back to Vegas, where might we find a place that serves a corned beef sandwich as good as Carnegie Deli?

A:

Carnegie Deli was an iconic and popular delicatessen chain whose home branch opened in 1937 across the street from Carnegie Hall in Midtown Manhattan; it closed in late December 2016. That was followed a few years later by the branch at the Mirage, which closed earlier this year, leaving Greenberg's at New York-New York as the only place on the Strip with Carnegie-like deli sandwiches. (In this writer's opinion, the Backstage Deli at Luxor is worth a miss, though the Del Mar Deli at South Point is good in a pinch, though I wouldn't compare the sandwiches to Carnegie's).

Otherwise, you have to go into the neighborhoods, but you'll find excellent corned beef at the Haifa restaurant (certified Glatt kosher, 900 E. Karen Avenue, Suite H102), along with Weiss Deli in Green Valley and Harrie's Bagelmania a few blocks east of the Strip on East Twain.

The latter two are where we go for good kosher-style corned-beef, pastrami, and tongue sandwiches on seeded rye with mustard. Who else has a favorite place for this kind of sandwich?

    Binions
Binions deli near the old poker room has the best pastrami sandwich I’ve ever had. I usually don’t like pastrami because it’s too fatty. Binions is very lean but still tender. I always make a point to get one every trip. Comes with potato salad and a pickle.
I’m assuming that, if their pastrami is so good, their corned beef must be equally amazing.
The sandwiches are not as thick as the Carnegie but they’re not as expensive either.
Don’t forget to tip the server a buck or two.

    The Bagel Cafe
The Bagel Cafe , on Buffalo , is the best NY style deli AND excellent bakery in Las Vegas. The Del Mar Deli at South Point is run by them. If you try eating there , I'm guessing you'll rate them 'best in town' !!

    Binion's
From waaaaay back, as long as I can remember, Binion's deli, in the back of the property toward the California, has served up a killer pastrami on rye. It's something that's hard to find in Vegas, and I've never understood why.

A good authentic Jewish deli could make a killing in Vegas. "Delicat essen." To eat lightly, aka snack. That fits in perfectly with the Vegas vibe IMHO.

For that matter, wasn't the sandwich invented by a guy who couldn't bear to leave the gaming table but was starving?

    I went for the knish
I'll miss it at Mirage. There was also a Carnegie's at Sands Bethlehem (now Wind Creek) but that was turned into the poker room recently. The only Carnegie's remaining AFAIK is at MSG. They just have (I think) turkey corned beef or pastrami sandwiches plus a half-sized knish. I doubt it will be part of MSG Sphere though.

    Bagel Cafe
I totally agree with Neal and don’t understand how the LVA staff does not know about it. The owner used to work at a kosher ‘appetizing’ place on Long Island, NY and the food is the real deal, albeit not Glatt Kosher in order to attract a more diverse crowd. In addition, you never know who you will run into there as I have personally seen several Vegas celebrities as well as Sheldon Adelson and his wife enjoying the occasional brunch there. That’s how you know it’s the real deal.

    We know it
We reviewed Bagel Cafe in LVA 1/17. We like it, just not as much as Bagelmania and Weiss.
