Question of the Day - 13 March 2020

Q:

Coronavirus in Las Vegas: What's happening now and what's going to happen?

A:

Has the rate of reservations to LV slowed down for the coming months? Will production shows close?

What are the casinos doing to prevent the spread of the virus?

What effect is it having on Vegas visitor counts and major conventions and events?

Will the WSOP be cancelled?

How has the virus scare affected the casinos?

Are virus fears or preparations having any impact at the casinos? (For example, I don’t like the thought of handling dice after a dozen or so other players have handled the same dice.)

Is Las Vegas looking to implement some health measures to stop the spread?

Are the strip clubs doing anything to prevent the spread between strippers and patrons?

What is T-Mobile and the Vegas Golden Knights doing to prevent the spread of the disease at soldout home hockey games?

What are casinos doing differently to prevent coronavirus, such as disinfecting differently, cooks and food servers wearing masks etc.

Has the c’virus impacted negatively on Las Vegas casinos? And if so, how much?

Any predictions, rumblings, predicted money loss on coronavirus affecting the opening of Allegiant Stadium?

Due to the coronavirus are there any precautions in place? Buffet closings?

Do you think any major headliner show will cancel due to the Coronavirus?  We have tickets to see Kelly Clarkson next month and are wondering if her show, as well as others, will go on as scheduled.

Are casinos handing out alcohol wipes for slot players due to the coronavirus? Wouldn’t want to be touching that spin button just yet.

Since the coronavirus has a high danger in the respiratory category, would it not be a major PR and health move for casinos to issue a no-smoking edict?

And finally: So the obvious question, I'm scheduled to come from Ohio at the end of the month. Should I cancel or come? If I come, should I be worried about touching chips, gaming tables, video poker machines? Hotel rooms? I can’t figure out how real this "pandemic" is and how concerned I should be.

Phew.

The above are just a representative sample of the dozens of questions we've received over the past couple of weeks from QoD readers far and wide. Never in the history of Question of the Day have we fielded so many queries on a single subject. We admit we've been a little hesitant to answer them, given how fast this story is developing around the world. But we finally decided that we had to make a statement, if not respond directly to every question.

Basically, much of the uncertainty surrounding this virus boils down to one question: How worried should I be?

The answer, of course, is hardly straightforward. In fact, it's quite complicated, since the coronavirus is having such a profound impact on so many different areas: medical, economic, political, and perhaps most of all, social. All that is way beyond the scope of this answer.

For our purposes here, all we can say definitively is that the response from the Las Vegas casino and convention industries has been mixed, almost to an extreme. The only thing that all the press releases, official statements, and off-the-record comments have in common is the phrase, "We're monitoring the situation closely."

On the one side is MGM Resorts, which has closed the buffets at all its Strip casinos as of this Sunday. Though it's a "temporary" measure, no prediction is forthcoming as to when the buffets might be reinstated and the situation is being reevaluated "weekly." We've also heard that Mandalay Bay is also shutting down Fleur, Aureole, and Mizuya on Sunday, while Libertine Social is cutting back its hours to Thursday through Sunday.

In addition, numerous events large and small have been postponed: Cirque du Soleil's annual fundraiser, One Night for One Drop; Raiding the Rock Vault at the Rio (which has gone to a three-show-a-week schedule due to "the sudden drop of Las Vegas visitors"); a growing number of trade shows, business events, and sports meets have been postponed or cancelled outright, including the major National Association of Broadcasters next month; and one headliner (the Zac Brown Band) so far has cancelled its show at T-Mobile.

On the other side are the huge Con/Expo-Con/Agg convention, with 130,000 attendees, has gone on without incident this week; it ends tomorrow. Likewise, most conventions scheduled for the next month or two, including the big ASD Market Week show in two weeks and the World Series of Poker in a little more than two months, are going on as planned, so far; restaurants are serving, shows are performing, and life continues mostly as usual -- with only five cases of the virus confirmed in Las Vegas and one in Reno. As of last Tuesday, 168 Nevadans were negative for the coronavirus, 164 were being monitored for possible infection, and 341 completed monitoring without developing symptoms or “were determined to have no risk.”

And yes, many casinos, following the lead of the Wynn, have installed hand-sanitizer stations. The strip club Little Darlings is sponsoring a promotion, giving away 50,000 free bottles of hand sanitizer while supplies last this month.

Beyond that, no one knows what the future of the coronavirus has in store. Last month, when this virus started making the news, no one could have predicted that it would shut down the Macau casinos for two weeks, lock down an entire country (Italy), be responsible for canceling all NBA and NHL games, MLB spring training, etc., and March Madness contested in empty arenas. A month from now, we'll probably look back and shake our heads over where we were today after what has happened since.

Only time can put the punctuation on the answer to all the questions. (And it's just a coincidence that this answer is running on Friday the 13th.) But we've started a running blog on the topic, where we're posting a list of all the changes this virus has wrought in Las Vegas; we'll also, as we can, answer questions posted in the comment boxes and keep track of all the developments chronologically. It's up now and you might want to bookmark it and check back when your concerns surface.

In addition, we'll be conducting a poll next week on whether or not you've changed your travel plans in general, and to Las Vegas in particular, because of the continuing uncertainty surrounding the spread of this virus. Here's the preview of the poll choices, in case you want to weigh in on how they're presented (and thanks to Jim for helping to get this ball rolling):

I've postponed a pleasure trip (not to Las Vegas) until the coronavirus situation stabilizes.

I've postponed a business trip (not to Las Vegas) until the coronavirus situation stabilizes.

I've postponed a pleasure trip (to Las Vegas) until the coronavirus situation stabilizes.

I've postponed a business trip (to Las Vegas) until the coronavirus situation stabilizes.

I wouldn't have postponed a business trip (to Las Vegas or not), but the event was postponed or canceled.

I haven't postponed a trip, whether for business or pleasure, due to the virus.

I'm taking advantage of low airfares, room rates, and/or car-rental prices to travel at this time.

    Hot weather is coming
On the up side, viruses don't like heat and by the end of May it will be 100 degrees here . . .

    Monday the 16th
My flight to Vegas leaves Houston at 7:10pm. I’ll be on it.

    On LV Trip Plans
I'm generally not one to over-react, but it seems to me that there are few better venues than a Las Vegas casino to spread a virus. People coming and going from all over the country, all in close proximity, all touching the same keys and buttons. Given everything that has closed or has been suspended already, it would not surprise me to see casinos added to the list.

    Car rental rates
With all this going on in the travel industry, my question is why have car rental rates skyrocketed? Thrifty wants $100 more per week then a year ago and that's pay now. With all the factors like parking fees and now these cancellations, the car rental companies should be glad to be renting anything. Rental rates now as they stand are a lot of Uber rides in my future!

    Not worried
I just stepped off a plane from the Middle East 2 days ago. Only reason I’m back to the US 7 days earlier than I wanted is because the closed the Israeli borders to anyone who has been in Egypt in the past 2 weeks. Well I fall in that category. I’m ready to go to Vegas now but I’ll wait until after 14 days to be sure I’m ok. Don’t want to put my favorite city in Jeopardy. But when my time is up vegas here I come. The planes will be practically empty as they were on my way back from the Middle East as well as the airports. Prob the casinos as well. Perfect time to travel I say. Stay safe y’all

    Sheer Fear
I live in Pahrump, just 60 miles from Las Vegas. Yesterday, Thursday the 12th I went grocery shopping. There are three grocery stores in Pahrump, I went to all three which was unusual for me, I normally just go to one. Why all three? Because the shelves were practically empty in all of them and had to go to all three to get the food I wanted. In all three stores the clerks told me people were making mad rushes in to stock up for the END OF THE WORLD. I kid you not! Irrational, stupid, inane fear! Las Vegas has half a dozen confirmed cases of Corvid-19 and these idiots I live amongst are emptying the grocery shelves, and no, I didn't get all of my usual groceries because of them but that's OK I don't live in fear of anything and know that "No one dies before their appointed time and when that time comes absolutely nothing can prevent the death."

I've postponed a pleasure trip (to Las Vegas) until financial markets stabilize.

Not sure if visiting the middle of April
I stay in Mesquite and drive to LV for a day during my visit. Presently, I'm not sure what I will do. But I'll make sure to keep updated here. Hopefully by then, we will have more info on the nature of the virus (cold vs hot weather, dry vs humid weather) and if it has leveled off. Being older I have to be safe. What's good is I can choose my time to visit. Fewer people mean less social contact..

    Transmission.
You may be infected from a person that IS infected.Gamblers touch buttons, cards, dice and those round things.I just got back and the only counter measure that I was aware of is wiping down the machines, immediately after a player leaves a slot/VP machine at the Downtown Grand. No mention of disinfecting of those other things.I was handling sticky chips at The California. The cards were changed on a normal schedule at most casinos that I played.
As I have read,60 + males are most at risk.
I fit into that category and I smoke and I came from Washington State! We went to a lot of places and touched a lot of things that other people have touched.I may be a carrier or I'm already infected.Las Vegas visitation numbers are DOWN.Profits are down across the world. Many businesses are disinfecting a lot more than B-4.Alaska Airlines has installed hospital-grade air scrubbers in their air craft.
I'll let you know in 2 weeks as to how I feel
Yes,people should LIMIT there travels to public places.

    other options for poll
I have delayed a decision on my next trip to Vegas pending stock market recovery
I am waiting to find the best deal that develops due to the casinos and airlines trying to recover some business

    ASD Show CANCELLED
My family has attended the spring Merchandise show every year for 23 years. But not this year, it is cancelled as of 8 PM EDT 3/12/2020. Now the hassle is cancelling the Flights. At least MGM has no cancellation penalties.

    TP?
I may be coming to Vegas in April.
Should I be prepared to bring my own toilet paper? LOL

Anyway, how long do you suppose they will keep the buffets closed?

  • shadow520 Mar-13-2020
    in town
Got here last night. Had no intention of cancelling. The amount of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) being spread around is astronomical. My flight from the midwest had 57 people on it. Everyone had their own row (if they wanted it). It was looney. I'll take some precautions, but I'm not shutting down my life over this. The media is blowing this way up.

    Double disincentive
I'd have to be crazy to deliberately go to a place where there are huge crowds of people, most of them unhealthy, and have them all cough on me and touch me. I'd rather be attacked by a swarm of wasps and dunked in battery acid.
Of course, I'd already have to be crazy to go someplace where you get charged $20 to park your car, hotels charge you a huge fee for...the privilege of renting and paying for a room, and the gambling is worse than in that gypsy tent that just set up on the edge of town.
Vegas was making me sick long before the coronavirus hit.

    on my way
Heading there Wed 03/18. Should be able to find a good VP machine.

    quarantined, then a trip
I was supposed to be in Mexico on a beach right now, but am in Seattle and came down with something (impossible to know if I'm infected, as you can't get a test unless you're already dead apparently). Went into quarantine and cancelled my trip, then booked Vegas for the first weekend of April. I did cancel my trip though, as I found a window of opportunity at the same pricing to re-book my trip to Mexico. Not afraid to travel, you just need to be smart about it. And now hopefully I will already have an immunity to the disease assuming I did actually contract it, but who knows. You only live once, I'm not going to run scared into my basement and build a wall of toilet paper between me and the world!

  • Llew Mar-13-2020
    Can I get out?
I’m a “snowbird”. I’ve been here since mid-January. I’m supposed to leave on April 1 (no joke) to drive back to Pennsylvania. Today I went to Sam’s Club for gas and they were sold out! If I can’t count on gas at reasonable prices, I might just be stuck here for a while.
Of course, there are worse places to be stuck, but if things keep closing, even Vegas will be boring.

  • Gary Thompson Mar-14-2020
    March Madness
We had a group of about 25 that were coming to Las Vegas for March Madness and now everyone has cancelled except for my wife who was planning to be here for a week on spring break. She is still coming because it is warmer than Wisconsin and she isn't going to let this interrupt here plans. If the NCAA could have been bet on, everyone would have still come. So maybe the poll question could read instead of "Business Trip" to " your trip" affected by cancellations.
