Question of the Day - 20 December 2022

Q:

If memory serves me correctly, last year the prices to renew membership to the LVA newsletter were $50 for paper and $37 for online. Now the paper membership is gone and the online membership went to $50, which makes for an increase of 25%. It seems that LVA is trending like the rest of Las Vegas, gouging customers to make an easy dollar. Why such a big increase all at once when LVA will be saving cost on printing and distribution?

A:

In 1992, when the Las Vegas Advisor went from six to 12 pages, the price increased from $30 to $50. At the time, there was no Internet, so that was the only option. That was also the last time the price was raised -- 30 years ago.

Thirty. Years. Ago.

Remember 1992? When the price of a gallon of gasoline was $1.11? A new Honda Civic cost $10,900? The median price of a single-family home was $121,500?

Not only has the price of LVA not gone up a single penny in three decades, it's actually gone down, from $50 to $37 for the online edition.

Now the online edition is the only option and the price is $50. It's true that we're saving on printing and postage, but the prices of everything else in our world and the greater world have gone up (or more accurately, the value of the dollar has dropped) dramatically.

We still print and mail the Member Rewards Books, which costs double what it did in 2019. The shows and meals we review, the gas to get there, upgraded computers, utility bills, insurance premiums, business licenses/permits/fees, office supplies, office cleaners, employee benefits ... Everything costs more, a lot more, than it did just a few years ago, let alone a few decades. Do we really need to explain this?

In the end, it's like everything else in life, especially in the current economic environment. If you believe that you continue to receive good value from our product, the additional $1.08 cents you're paying for it every month won't make a bit of difference. If not, we'll be sorry to see you go.

    30 years!
Your reply could have stopped after that first paragraph.

Anybody that doesn’t understand that prices have gone up a bit in 30 years would not need or understand the long winded explanation.

    30 years? Well done!

    LVA
Ordered mine a few days ago, even with the small increase it is still a bargain.

  • David Miller Dec-20-2022
    I am surprised
I am surprised that the price for the Advisor had not increased previously- it has been and continues to be a bargain.

  • Bob Dec-20-2022
    Awesome Bargain!
Thanks for the reminder to Renew! and Shame on the Stiffs who don't see $50 of Value in all that LVA provides. Everything else aside, Just the Information, News, education and QOD! on this website, plus the ability to interact with like minded and not so like minded folks on the forums etc. is a Bargain at 14 cents a day! Having run business' all my life, I'll bet Anthony and crew needed/wanted to do this increase probably 5 years ago, and put it off at their own expense till now! Keep up the good work LVA! the value is infinite, the price ($50) is a Bargain!

    Keep up the great work
Been a long time reader and subscriber. The value of this membership is well worth the price increase. Keep up the great work, and looking forward to my continued membership!

  • Sandra Ritter Dec-20-2022
    Congrats!
I've been amazed all along that the price has never gone up, at least not since I've been subscribing. As an accountant who works with businesses, and who is self-employed, I'm fully aware of the cost of doing business. Try to find any other company that hasn't raised prices several times over the last 30 years. Congrats! No complaints here! And yes, thank you for the reminder to renew :)

  • Dorothy Kahhan Dec-20-2022
    No complaints here
The price has remained the same since the mid 90s when we joined, and in fact, has gone down for us when we switched from the print to the online edition. There's a *LOT* of value there. And that said, I wonder if LVA is going to give us an advance peek at what the 2023 coupon book will have to offer.

  • [email protected] Dec-20-2022
    Math
Since the OP thinks that an increase from $37 to $50 is a 25% increase rather than the 35% it actually is, I suspect they don't do too well with the simple math needed to be a smart gambler, either! :-)

    Big tex
LVA has been a corner stone making trips to Vegas affordable and fun. I thank you for that.
However I will not be renewing for the first time in many years. I suffer from pulmonary fibrosis and am on oxygen 24/7 and cannot leave the house much less travel. LVA has been a real life line to every thing my wife and I love about Vegas.

Keep up the good work on the information you provide.

    Deke has been great.

    Candy from a baby
I've been a fan and very often a subscriber since the late 1990s. My Vegas worldview would be very different were it not for the LVA. I netted $100 on coupon play last week even with losing my $50 match play at Downtown Grand. I will always be a customer and fan.

The price went up??? Bah, Humbug! (Guess the Ghost of Buying online will have to visit the old boy tonight!

    MP/FP
My only comment is the casinos havn't increased their Match Plays and Free Plays...and in alot of cases were reduced, discontinued and only allowed to be used ONCE a year.

  • Kevin Lewis Dec-20-2022
    INFLAYSHUN!!!!
Consider that $50 today is actually LESS money than it was the year before...and the year before that...etc. So if we were paying LVA dues adjusted for inflation, we'd be ponying up over $125 annually.

  • Kurt Wiesenbach Dec-20-2022
    Online only
I'm just sad that I won't have the nice compact book/magazine (whatever it's called) to read as I'm on the plane to Vegas. I really don't like reading online, and if I print it out I'm sure it will be an 8.5x11 document. Maybe you can make a format where if printed it prints 2 pages per sheet so it can be folded over. I'll really miss getting it in the mail!

  • Sean Lowery Dec-20-2022
    Online Version
For those who have been used to reading the print version of the Advisor, investing in a tablet is a nice alternative. The PDF format is a high quality version to read. Tablets are lightweight, easily carried around, and read well like magazines and newspapers anywhere you go. They are also very affordable. I was a print reader for many years and I don’t miss it.

  • Anthony Curtis Dec-20-2022
    Appreciated
Gratifying comments. Thank you. Yes, it got to the point where there really wasn't an option. Not easy, but necessary. Trust me, we appreciate all of you for letting us do what we do.

    Great Value
I've been a regular subscriber since about 2005 and was originally paying more than the new $50 price as I live in the UK and every year that we've visited LV we've more than got our subscription back from the vouchers. I reckon over the years you've been paying me to visit Vegas! Keep up the good work.

  • Srgntpep Dec-20-2022
    Kudos!!!
Wow I had no idea it's been 30 years--I've been a regular subscriber to the emails for at least 10, though, and have actually had the privilege of having more than one question answered in that time frame! Keep up the great work--here's to 30 more!

  • CMU Dec-20-2022
    Increase
I understand what the person asking the QofD is saying, and it doesn't matter that there hasn't been an increase in price since the early 90"s. Anyone running a business should know what costs and expenses are, and if prices need to be increased every year or every few years because of those expenses it's justified. LVA should have been increasing prices along the way, not jacking up the price all at once. It looks like they're gouging the customer because they can (like the casinos), not because they need to. I don't have a problem with the price increase, just the way it was done.

  • Roy Furukawa Dec-20-2022
    WTH?!
How can anyone complain about a newsletter that gives you a MRB that you will make your money back for the cost of said newsletter simply by using just a handful of the coupons? Some people just try to find a reason to complain.

  • Raymond Ray Dec-20-2022
    Still a good deal
Even though the price of the book is going up a little bit it's still a good deal. With just one trip to Ellis Island we get almost a value of the entire book and just one little Casino. Definitely going to buy another book if we go to Vegas this year. With more casinos changing hands who knows the book might be even better this year or next. Keep up the good work

    Value of the Dollar
Although I do not argue with your cost comparisons of gasoline, cars, houses, etc. I do disagree with the references to the absolute value of the dollar. The US dollar has increased in world nominal value since the 1992 costs you used in the answer. For example, the US dollar was worth approximately and roughly the same as a Canadian dollar. Today, the US dollar costs approximately $1.40 Canadian. In other words, the $50 US is now about $70 Canadian. (Other world prices will show other, but somewhat similar variances of the actual value.)

While I do not dispute the value of your publication or the reason for the increase in price, I do disagree with the analytical method you put forth. In proper economic theory it is incorrect and, with respect, misses proper macroeconomic analysis of glogal trade (ie, currency) value.

Nevertheless, please keep up your great work and "value".

  • David Dec-21-2022
I used to pay for two subscriptions
One for me and one for my father. But I cancelled after a couple of years once I realized that the focus (especially the discounts) was heavily on downtown and locals casinos, which I don’t visit. However, if I was a current subscriber the switch to a digital format would cause me to cancel.

  • steve crouse Dec-21-2022
    Gouging?
I'll save my bitchin for the corporate casinos that are taking in larger and larger profits with fewer and fewer perks.
It will be great fun when TSHTF and they all start fighting over the occasional gambler with enough money to visit.

  • melman Dec-21-2022
    Why the dig?
It's one thing to justify increasing costs and that you haven't raised your prices in forever. I think we all get that. But why the last sentence with the sarcastic jab?

It reminds me of the response I got a few years ago when I asked why you terminated the deal to buy the current years LVA coupon book in late December few a few bucks. I thought I was doing you a favor, buying a coupon book that already had many expired coupons and was going into the trash anyway. And it gave us an excuse to come in during our holiday visit to LV and buy books and etc. The response had the same snotty tone: that it was a gimmick during the 2008 recession and that the recession was over. Do you notice how that was almost 15 years ago and I still remember it?

I enjoy your content and I'm willing to pay for it. But the attitude just rubs me the wrong way sometimes.

    Merry Christmas to all.

Is there a coupon for a Trumpie NFT?

  • Nina Barresi Dec-27-2022
    Great Value
The LVA coupon is the best deal around and worth the cost.

  • [email protected] Dec-29-2022
    Seriously?
I'm the biggest cheapskate err, frugal guy around BUT I'll wager the person asking this question also whined to the cashier at Dollar Tree when all their GREAT $1.00 items increased to a reprehensible/whopping $1.25. My response was: "OK go buy the same item at the grocery store priced at $2.50 or $3.00 then..."
