Question of the Day - 04 March 2021

Q:

We are really trying to visit, but  our state (New York) makes it very difficult. The state wants a COVID test completed before returning home. Is there a testing location on the Strip that offers these tests for low or no cost? It would seem that this is a common problem.

A:

We ran this past Stephanie Bethel of the Southern Nevada Health District and she provided this guide to SNHD-approved coronavirus testing sites:

https://covid.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org/testing/. The nearest to the Strip is the Stan Fulton Building on the northwest corner of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas campus, on Flamingo Road.

“There might be some private testing sites available as well,” she adds.

Resorts like The Venetian and Wynn Las Vegas have done large-scale, on-site testing, but that is strictly for employees. Our best advice is to hop a cab or bus to the Stan Fulton Building (it’s easy to spot, just next to a fire station) and get your test done there. Just make sure you go on a day (Sunday-Thursday) when testing is in session.

If you’re staying downtown, your best option is the Cashman Center, downhill from the Mob Museum and Neon Museum. Again, a taxi or ride-sharing service will be needed but, given your predicament, it’s a small price to pay. Wherever you go, appointments are strongly advised. The testing, however, is free to the public.

    Instantaneous results or...?
How long do you have to wait for the results, and will they provide you with documentation?

  • Jackie Mar-04-2021
    I suggest
Before you leave New York, I suggest that you contact some official to see if getting a test in Las Vegas will suffice to let you back in. Also, it doesn't hurt to call the testing facilities in Las Vegas to find out how long it takes them to get test results.
Results for test vary so if you plan to test just before getting on your return flight you want to make sure you have the results.

If it takes a week to get results a test is moot as during that week you could have acquired the virus. Some testing methods take only 30 minutes, and some a couple of hours.
So verify testing results time, make an appointment for testing that gets the results in time for your flight.

Even after all of that, someone on your flight home could possibly infect you. Some States, maybe New York, has testing facilities at the airport for arrivals, you might want to check on that possibility, instead of risking getting infected on the flight.

    Bottom line, it all sucks!

OMG!! The testing situation is terrible for a city that is begging for visitors. There should be multiple sites and be open 7 days a week. Also they should have the rapid result tests.

I've had 9-10 tests since Covid began. They've cost my employer $150 for the rapid. The results come back in 15 minutes and the networks will allow for you to use that test for 7 days. You get a printout and they will send the receipt and resuls to your email, if you ask. The $200 test was to travel oversea and one took 24 hours to process.

My experience a few months ago at UNLV
I got tested at UNLV. Best to have an appt, as it saves some time. I had a rental car, plenty of free parking there. Best way to get results the quickest is to create an account (results.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org, they give you the website info at the test). Results were about 12 hours later for me. If I didn't log on to the account, I wouldn't have seen the results so quickly. I think they only text you if you test positive.

Good advice Jackie, the best official to contact would be our EMMY winning Gov. Coumo. He has been applauded as the foremost expert by the media. Just remember he said not to trust the vaccine.

    Just a matter of time
I have to believe there will be more options soon.

    Vaccine
Why would you even want to take a corona test when you are asymptotic? If you are pos even without symptoms you are counted as an active case. There is a10 % positivity rate. That means you have antibody in your blood and means nothing. Means sometime you had contact with virus and recovered. It is like a carrier state and immune. Believe it or not if you are neg it will be sent out for antigen test and mysteriously frequently comes back pos. You thus can be contact traced and even could be quarantined. Beware!!! See md if you have symptoms. Do web search on various tests using non goggle search engine. Google filters out anything that ? Their narrative. I expect I will be blocked on this website soon. I have been on other medical site. Who was it who said -Truth in times like this can be dangerous

    Vaccine
You have had 9-10 tests. I would think you are joking. Money wise you are sure supporting the medical complex. Do you know diff in antibody and antigen test. New York as you know is crazy. A 15 minute test is an antibody test. They have done so many tests that positivity rate has actually been decreasing Every antibody test is counted as active case. You have no symptoms and you are counted as active case You see why numbers are high? The CDC does report actual corona cases in fine ! Print. Most recent deaths from corona was about 30k. Rest are people who had co- morbidities. I was more generous with death rate. I take 10% of total deaths and you will come close to actual corona deaths. I was overly generous. Deaths from flu last year. Depends when you check. Now 30-40 k last year. Where is flu virus this year? Will be interesting to see CDC flu death rate for year 2020 and 2021 Think about it.

    NY is crazy
Well said Jerry. Finally someone who knows what’s going on. If only more would figure it out.

    Jerry, Jerry, Jerry.

The person is not asking about the overall benefit of getting a Covid test. He/they live in New York, tight restrictions regarding travel in and out of the state. They need to comply with requirements, whatever those really are, to travel to Vegas and back. Your opinions about testing and numbers etc. aren't the point here.

My 2 cents for the person who asked: Check with your health department for official updated requirements. Don't rely on the internet/web sites, since they often have old information. Can you do a voluntary quarantine in place of having Covid test? Who is checking passengers' test results when they land in NYC? How is that going? Inquiring minds want to know.

I suppose we should have expected...
Jerry to say that there's no need to get tested if you don't have symptoms, because no symptoms means you're not carrying the virus.

This is the direct opposite of the truth, and contradicts the extremely thoroughly validated science on the question.

Also, what's the big deal? Does it kill you to get a Covid test? Does it put you in ghastly, prolonged agony? Does it make your genitals wilt? Does it cost you thousands of dollars?

    NY Border
As I said, well written Jerry, when they turn to insults you step back and observe. Cars and trucks from all over the country pass over the NY border 24 hours a day near where I live. No one asking to show their papers yet. Governor Coumo said do not trust the vaccine so testing should be a non issue.
