Question of the Day - 04 November 2021

Q:

Have craps table game payouts changed a la roulette and blackjack?

A:

Anthony Curtis tells that, believe it or not, the payouts at craps have remained substantially stable over time.

There have been a few minor variations in payouts, though nothing as egregious, as you note, as 6-5 blackjack and triple-zero roulette. Also new crap side bets have been introduced here and there. But the basic bets are mostly unchanged.

    Thank God
I've been waiting for them to screw with craps but so far so good. The side bets are all bad bets but it doesn't matter, as AC says all of the basic bets haven't changed. That's all we need is for odds bets to no longer be true odds or something else stupid.

    Payouts
The biggest issue with craps tables are the changes to the odds behind the line. The double odds ones, I have a feeling, will be the way they all go at some point. The good places have 10x, the standard has been (last 10-20 years) the 3x4x5x odds rule. I wonder, since the casino statistically makes no money on that, how long until they all reduce the max odds to 2x? Also, the middle table bets have had the odds tweaked a bit in some places, particularly the bonus bets. The all/small/tall is a great example. When it started it was 175-1 for the "make em all", now it's 150-1. Luckily, making changes to anything on the felt carries a cost to it in replacing the felt, so hopefully that deters must places from messing with those type of changes. The behind the line odds can be changed with a simple placard like blackjack odds, though, so that's why I feel like that 2x will eventually take over.

    Why I prefer craps!
It is true the casinos still pay true odds and have not screwed with it! Why? BJ and roulette have been going down the sh**ter. Well, just wait. I'm sure something is in the works to change craps.

    Totally agree with Mike
$ multiple that you can make on "Behind the line" odds bets have been reduced is many/most places. AT one time, a LONG time ago I think I actually saw a 100X multiple for this bet. Must have been 30+ years ago, maybe at the long ago imploded Landmark?

Wonder what new poor odds side bets will be coming up next.

Think about it: what "could" they change?
There aren't that many things you can change in craps, other than reducing the amount you can bet on an odds bet. Probably the biggest thing I can think of is to change the field bet so a 12 pays double instead of triple.

I think the casinos don't consider craps a game "for the masses" where they can get away with serious odds reductions, like they can in roulette with the "triple-zero wheel" and blackjack with 6-5 payouts (I assume the casinos think that most people who show up on Friday and Saturday nights either don't care or think that they can count cards well enough to overcome it). It's showing up in VP as well; in 2019, the Cromwell had 9/6 25c Jacks or Better; now, not only was the best 25c game I could find 6/5, but you had to play 10 quarters to get the 800x payout for a royal flush!

    Simple Changes
I agree, one of the changes they've made is reducing the amount of odds you can get. When I started playing double odds was standard everywhere. Then it started going up. 3, 4, 5 became a standard and then some went higher, 10X even 100X. Now they seem to be going back down to double odds.

    MGM field bet
i believe the field bet at mlife casinos used to pay 3x on 12 making it a 2.78% edge until recently. I've been to Borgata and Aria and the tables there now only pay 2x which doubles the house edge.
