Question of the Day - 21 August 2022

Q:

Any recommended places on or near the strip where we can have a few reasonably priced beers and throw some darts?

A:

Both darts and reasonably priced beers are somewhat contradictory to being on the Strip.

That said, Flight Club is coming to the Grand Canal Shoppes. It was announced last year for spring of this year, but it's apparently running a season or two behind; we hear it's opening soon. Flight Club launched in London in 2015, which is only natural, since England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland occupy five of the top nine locales for the best dart players in the world; Phil Taylor, a Brit, is considered the greatest darts player of all time.

Flight Club's claim is that it's "reinventing darts" as a social experience, with high-tech games suitable for groups and food and drink packages. It has three locations in the U.S. currently: Boston, Houston, and Chicago; three more are coming soon, with Atlanta and Denver joining Las Vegas. If the Boston prices for beer are any indication of how much you'll pay in Vegas, the range is $6.50 for Bud Light up to $10 for craft beer from the tap.

The Tilted Kilt is a bar chain with a dozen locations around the country, including the LINQ. Darts is one of a number of bar games, including billiards, video games, and sports-related challenges, such as a golf-swing simulator and Pop-a-Shot. Beers, whether in the can, bottle, or draft, are $9-$10.

Hogs & Heifers, the rowdy downtown bar across from the Downtown Grand, has darts. Otherwise, you'll have to head out to bars in the 'burbs for your beer and darts.

Perhaps the best place is Crown & Anchor, a favorite with Anthony Curtis and the go-to place for an authentic British pub experience. There are two locations, one east (1350 E Tropicana Ave.) and one west (4755 Spring Mountain Rd.) and both have steel-tipped darts and 30 draft beers from all over the world that are eminently affordable.

Other good places for darts include CD's Sports Bar at 3025 E. Desert Inn Road (and Pecos); it has a lot of boards and sponsors blind-draw darts doubles tournaments on Saturdays. The Tavern, at 1113 S. Rainbow (W. Charleston) has six boards and hosts league play. The Rum Runner Desert Inn, 3050 E. Desert Inn Rd. (between McLeod and Mojave) is well reviewed as one of the best places for steel-tipped darts in Las Vegas. And Good Timez Billiards, 5740 W Charleston Blvd. (Jones) is one of a number of pool halls that also have dart boards and other games.

That should get you started, anyway.

    Beer Prices
I don't drink alcohol, so had no idea how much it costs in bars. This article, however, made me curious. I looked up the website of my local grocery store and found that they sell a pack of 12 bottles (12 oz) of Bud Light for $9.99, or 83 cents a bottle. According to your article, Flight Club sells one bottle for $6.50. That's a 680% markup over retail, and who knows how much over wholesale. Wow!

Las Vegas is an actual city; the Strip isn't
The answer to this question illustrates a simple truth: if all the casinos imploded tomorivrow, Las Vegas would still be a huge, bustling "normal" desert city. So if you can get away from the casinos, you can find "normal" things like brewpubs with darts and people who aren't wearing their underwear on their heads.

    Sand Dollar Lounge
I haven't been there in a while but the Sand Dollar on Spring Mtn Road had darts and live music, fun place to go with friends. It's less than 2 miles west of Treasure Island.
