Question of the Day - 24 May 2020

Q:

With all of the layoffs and furloughs as detailed in the QOD of 5/5/2020, will those dealers who are rehired have to undergo any training or relicensing procedures before the casinos can reopen?

A:

In the first policies and procedures statement issued by Gaming Control a month or so ago, the Board addressed the issue of dealer relicensing, but only as it applies to work permits that expired during the shutdown. "Employees whose gaming registrations have expired during the closure may work for up to 30 days while they renew their registrations. The Enforcement Division will not take any regulatory action against licensees for expired gaming registrations, as long as all applicable renewal applications are submitted via the Board’s online registration system within 30 days of the reopening date."

As for training, all hotel-casino employees, at least according to the plans made public by the big casino companies, will undergo health and safety training to protect themselves and guests before reopening time arrives.

But as far as retraining dealers on how to do their jobs, we haven't heard anything of that sort. Presumably, blackjack dealers haven't forgotten how to calculate 6-5 payouts for blackjacks and crap dealers remember that the 4s and 10s return 9-5.

Granted, they might be a little rusty after the two-month-plus layoff, but again presumably, the rhythm and reason of their jobs will return quickly.

Do dealers need to be relicensed or retrained before reopening?

    6-5
    The dig at 6-5 payout is noted and appreciated by those of us who remember the better days of 3-2 and still seek out those games in Vegas

    Vegas shows
    @Patricia
    TV channel 13 in Las Vegas had a news announcement from MGM saying they had closed all of their live entertainment until the end of June, and they might extend that date even further. They said the plan is to eventually start opening a few shows that would attract a smaller number of people in the smaller theaters and lounges first, since those venues would be easier to disinfect and they could ensure audiences followed the rules about health safety. The big shows like Cirque du Soleil and major headliners and concerts will be the last that get restarted and I don't think anyone knows when that will happen or how they will protect audience members per CDC and Nevada gov't guidelines. The other casino resorts in Vegas will likely do similar. The last thing they want is for several hundred people to get sick from attending a large show performance that lasts about 90 minutes. So expect show openings to proceed very cautiously, it won't be like Spring Break on Florida beaches.

    SINGLE OR DOUBLE DECK PITCH
    Pitch will more than likely be a thing of the past since the players need to pick up and hold the cards. Pitch does require practice if you havent done it in awhile so in some respects, without having to worry about pitch anymore (all games will be dealt from a shoe) the blackjack dealers will have a much easier time.
