Question of the Day - 26 August 2020

Q:

Is Vegas as depressing as I imagine it might be under the circumstances?

A:

Some people, who love Las Vegas for the crowds, excitement, and endless things to do, might call it depressing, but to us, depressing doesn't quite express the current circumstances.

Vegas was definitely depressing during the shutdown: surreal and deflating, with nothing open, no one around, and especially no traffic. It was, without a doubt, dismal and we were, without a doubt, doleful. Today, it's almost certainly depressing to employees of hospitality and support businesses who are still out of work and trying to survive on unemployment.

But from our perspective, it's less depressing now than it is underwhelming. We admit that it's sad and uncertain, but we're not reaching for our selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (Prozac, Lexapro, Zoloft, and the like), nor are we renewing our prescriptions.

What we experience these days is that it's hard to do the things you want to do, with half the venues closed and all the bars shut down.

For example, though the sports books have all the games on the big screens, you can't sit at a nearby bar, nurse a drink, and play video poker while watching the end of a sporting event you've got money riding on. There's no hot dog stand there to grab a quick bite. The pizza place in the casino is probably locked. Half the food-court counters and more than half the restaurants are dark. Every one of them paints a picture of laid-off workers and cash-strapped owners, not to mention great meals and experiences that are unavailable, with no date at which they will be again and no guarantee that they won't disappear forever.

But we're eternal optimists, as long-term readers of QoD and LVA no doubt know. So until the Day of Doom has arrived for sure, we'll believe that the good times will roll again, sooner or later. If we didn't, then we'd be depressed. But we do, so for now, Las Vegas is just ... for the lack of a better word ... buzzless.

    Hang in there
Coming there in Sept with the whole of family members looking for good time. There is always light at the end of the tunnel if you look for it. Cheers from God's Country Packer Land.

    No less traffic
Having small businesses and bars closed is totally due to the whims of the horrible democrat governor Steve Sisolak. He has a number of people out to go to businesses and fine them if everyone is not complying with his edicts. While Churches can only have a maximum of 50 people (no matter what they hold), and Casinos can only have a maximum of 50% capacity, if you hold a church event of 500 in a casino room that holds 1600, Sisolak will have his officers attempt to shut it down. This recently happened at the Ahern.

    Chaos gives poor results
We don't have a national federal strategy like some countries implemented to deal with this crisis. So each state is coming up with its own ideas. This gives a wide variety in how each state decides to handle the problem, so you're going to see inconsistent policies, rules and results. No country has solved this problem 100%, but the ones that have one national plan of attack against covid that their entire population is following are doing a much better job and people there have started regaining some of their normal life activities, they see that the plan works so they support it. There are times when one central government plan is needed. Large companies like Amazon, Fedex and others know you can't leave important decisions up to each individual office, there has to be one headquarters running things to get the best results the company wants.

    Wow, Dawn
If you don't want to be safe, do it away from me. I suppose IF the governor were republican, you would comply with the order, (kind of like Texas does now that their governor figured it out)

    Adapt
As obviously seen in recent QODs people are adapting to the situation which is leaving Las Vegas mainly out of the picture. I live in a Nevada town some distance from Las Vegas and have noticed that the patronage of our local casinos has not dropped off a significant amount since last December. The difference is that Las Vegas has to attract a huge amount of non-local business to sustain itself and that introduces a huge amount of people that think the virus is a joke or government conspiracy so they wind up going back hove with a case of covid-19 raging through their body. Others, more sensible, adapt other ways to get their gambling fix satisfied rather than risk an illness. Las Vegas won't recover until after a cure has rendered the virus a mute problem. The smartest thing the Las Vegas casinos can do right now is shut down until that time.

    To Vegasdawn
OK, you hate Democrats, but the problem is that you think a Republican Governor would have done better. What? He would have thrown money at you instead like Trump does? Or lock you in your home like Trump did? I've got a question for all of you Democrats and Republicans. When was the time your party choice you voted for lived up to a single campaign promise or did anything positive for this nation? At 18 trillion in national debt we couldn't afford the interest payment, now with the current debt thanks to stimulus payments we are at 30 trillion. Republican stupidity to blame and the dumb Democrats would have done worse. Just what do you think will happen to our Nation now???

    Stay safe
I live in Canada and this will be the first year since 1973 that I haven't gone to Las Vegas. I've always joked that my contributions to the local economy have built several towers over the years😃. I sympathize with what my favorite vacation spot is going through, however I cannot think of coming for a visit unless I am guaranteed that it is safe to do so. Just getting on a plane is a scary thought!
In Canada our restaurants and bars are open but not our casinos and social distancing and mask wearing rules are strict. The measures that your governor is insisting on are the same that we have and they has gone a long way to reducing the number of infections to a very manageable point. He obviously knows it works and saves lives so he should be supported. The city of Toronto averages only about 20-30 cases a day and we are 5 times the size of Las Vegas. We can only hope that a vaccine or cure happens soon.

    Come on!
Turn off TV news and go to Vegas. Read some Trip Reports on LVA. There is fun to be had, especially if you enjoy casino gambling and aren't dependent on the usual variety of shows and clubs. You'll find enough to eat even if your favorite hasn't opened just yet. The casino environment will be pretty much like before except everyone wearing masks and a few machines turned off to insure distancing.

Hell, a lady won 4 million the other day at Bellagio. I bet she wouldn't call it depressing.

The different face masks being worn almost deserve a fashion show of their own...fun! Camaraderie is the mood. Everyone in the same boat.

Dealers and other staff will be happy to meet and greet you! Fewer players at the tables? Fine with me, less crowded.

    Vegas during the pandemic
I'll be going next month for the 4th time since they've re-opened. I like that you can get around town without too much hassle (other than the lights can still make you wait forever for the non existent cross traffic), and the parking garages aren't too full and are free right now. I can still go to a lot of different restaurants for whatever type of food I want, and the pools are open and for the most part not too crowded. I just wish the hot tubs were open, and some shows. But other than that I have fun every time I come, and seem to re-book a trip as soon as I get home because I want to go back. Now if they would only open the Pre-Check lines at the airport!

    Time to re-think!
More than depresing, It's diferent. It seems like a good time to review and reinvent Vegas. There is such a variety of venues, por everybody, why does everione have to be almost the same, millenial friendly for example, there is something for everyone, variety, that's the key, dont de-theme, embrace those family friendly places, don't forget the history, there are plenty of historical places and a rich history, there are lots of roudy rude and millenial crowded places, let them be, there are lots of convention frienly and busines friendly places, great!. enough for every one, variety is the key to succes, now, make promotions, get rid of paid parking, get rid of hidden costs, get rid of resort fees witch are illegal in the first place, make customer service and the enjoyment of the guest the priority, and promote the heck those qualities !!! ( well after the pandemic has realy gone)

    Table Minimums
I'll avoid responding to the political comments even though I want to.

I just returned from LAS. I was shocked to see some of the table minimums were as high as ever. Both on the strip and downtown, high mins even on a Monday afternoon. I get that higher mins result is more actual dollars for the theo that the casinos get to keep, but the tables were empty, while at some casinos with lower mins had some players. What the heck is wrong with some of these bosses? Don't they realize that they are failing at math? I mean 2% of something, even if that something is smaller than normal, is better than 2% of nothing? Saw plenty of dealers standing at empty tables with $25 mins. Nuts.

    Virus
Please? If you were to get sick it is same as flu or cold. Thousands die of flu every year and no one pays att. This is not political this is about power and people control. How many of you know someone who has COVID ? Careful it could be flu. About 10% of population turns up pos on the useless antibody test. I know 4 people who were asymptomatic and foolishlee went to get tested. They left after one hour wait. They were called and told they were pos. A pos antibody test is counted as active. disease # are falsely high. The antigen test cross reacts with cold and sars virus. Divide reported cases by 10 and you have numbers. If a patient dies of comirbity and has a pos antibody test death is COVID. Could give you more info but it is useful. Have you heard of New World Order and the new!!! Normal. They are ordering you to do things science does not support. It is a massive false flag to those who know what they. I am physician with major chem biol. every thing is a lie. You make get si

    Virus
Continue above. You may get sick so what the hell. I have gotten sick before in Vegas as others. Bad part is this is not over. Look at something other than cnn. People call it fake news and I agree. One individual said don’t watch news. I agree. Not being political but I only watch Tucker Carlson. Fauci WHO Briex give out tons of false info. Virus can spread via eye and ear. as well. The six ft thing and contact tracing. ?? Garbage. How do they know you have been close to 14 people. I play video poker and don’t like to be told I can only play 2 out of 3 machines. Good machines are scarce enough and decrease these by 1/3? Nice to continue this scam but they ( Republicans and demos) don’t intend it to stop. Until people push back. Rioters and looters do not have to follow rules we do. I have come since91. I will be back when the old Vegas is back not a new normal the shadow gov pushes. The movie is on Netflix. Have you seen it ? Prob no. This is not about disease remover that good luck

    Wow...just wow
First thing first...@LVA ..great response to the original question. well written and thought out. Congrats....My two pennies worth would be that it is an individual choice whether to come to Vegas or not. As you can tell by the responses to this question each persons thought of "depressing" is different, as it should be, but for me it is not political and I feel that going to Vegas to play will either meet or exceed my expectations. Less crowds, more comped rooms and bargain flights. Actually the flight is the only concern I have but that has nothing to do with Vegas. I expect to come, in Sept, with enough money to have a fun time (win or lose) with less hassle than usual..I'll write a report after my trip...keep safe everyone.

    Depressing, defined ...
... is seeing the typical parade of 5-watt bulbs with their denialism and projection toward their boogeyman of choice. Again, please LVA, upgrade your comments software to include an ignore or mute option. Please ...

    Depressing is Individual
If you depend on entertainment, restaurants, including buffets, night/day clubs and bars for a great Vegas experience, you probably will be depressed. Especially if you're paying for the room with a resort fee. If you only go to Vegas for gambling in a less than safe environment, you probably won't be depressed. My wife and I still go to Henderson every couple of months to shop at Winco for bulk items. We haven't been to a casino in the Vegas area since June 27th. We don't feel comfortable (safe) gambling there anymore. We felt less than wanted when they did away with the specials in the restaurants that were open. We are buffet people and the closures, at most casinos, severely diminished our Vegas experience. Hope your experience is fun and safe.

  • Jeff Aug-26-2020
Only an ostrich could enjoy Vegas now
I understand the rationale of taking a risk of serious illness in order to do critical or at least important things like making a living, getting an education, seeing a doctor, worshipping, buying food, traveling to be with loved ones, or even exercising to stay in good physical condition.

But going to Vegas to have fun is not on that list, because it's impossible to have fun when all around you are constant reminders of the risk of getting and/or transmitting a terrible disease. So unlike buying food or going to the doctor, the anxiety about the virus wipes out the value to be gained by assuming the risk.

In other words, worry that the chip I just touched, or the smoke I just breathed, or the glass I just drank from had the dreaded virus on it, despite all the precautions (which are not perfect and are being widely flouted) would put such a crimp in my enjoyment -- and enjoyment is the only reason for the activity -- that there would be no point in going to Vegas.

  • Jeff Aug-26-2020
    How bad is it?
Anyone who thinks that Vegas or the casinos have controlled the virus to the point of its no longer being a worry needs to read-up on how Nevada and the casinos have bungled containing the virus to the extent of Nevada being at the bottom of all the states (along with Texas and a couple of others) in their management of Covid.

An article in the Daily Beast from just two days ago describes a Vegas that no one in their right mind would go out of their way to visit. Vegas casino workers who have little choice are traumatized on a daily basis by having to come to work.

LVA does not permit posting links to articles, but you can Google "Daily Beast Las Vegas" which should provide the link to the article "these-casino-staffers-are-working-in-fear-amid-coronavirus"

    clarification to vegasdawn comment
Just to make sure someone doesn't get the wrong idea about the Ahern.......
The comment by vegasdawn mentions that the Ahern recently held an event in a "casino room". The Ahern is no longer a casino, it used to have a casino license when it was the Lucky Dragon a couple of years ago but after its bankruptcy sale to a new owner the casino license was lost. The Ahern is now just a hotel and convention/conference facility, no gambling allowed. I'm pretty sure there are specific laws about who can own a casino, ownership has to be approved by the state, if a casino is sold the gambling license doesn't automatically transfer to the new owner. As far as I know the new owner of the Lucky Dragon (Don Ahern) didn't apply for a casino license, he just renamed the place and hopes to make it a successful convention and business conference type of hotel. It's only a few minutes from the LV Convention Center.
