Question of the Day - 11 October 2025

Q:

We saw a dog on a leash in a major Strip casino, but it didn't look like a service dog, just a pet. What are the rules for dogs in casinos?

A:

Service dogs are allowed to go anywhere with a guest — the casino, restaurants, pool area, even the nightclub. And hotel staff can ask only two questions about dogs that guests bring and claim to be service animals, when the answers aren't self-evident from simple observation.

Is this animal needed because of a disability?

What work or tasks has this animal been trained to do?

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, hospitality staff can't ask for documents, certificates, proof, or details about either the individual’s disability or the animal's training. The biggest complaint disability organizations hear from their clients is that they're challenged in these ways.

For a similar question we answered on this subject a few years ago, we learned that even if it doesn't look like a service dog, if the guest claims it is, the dog has free run to go anywhere with the patron. However, in a non-pet-friendly hotel, if someone is simply taking a dog for a walk in the casino or bringing one along "for luck," security would probably find him or her and ask him and her to take the dog and leave.

That said, if that someone is firing up a slot or video poker machine at $500 a hand, even non-pet-friendly casinos would probably tolerate his or her dog.

    I get it
If you don't have family or friends to feed, water, clean up, or medicate a pet (my cat, twice a day insulin shot) while you are away, you pay somebody to do it or forgo the trip.

As long as Fido doesn't bark incessantly enough to disturb (like my neighbor's dog at home...grrr), I'm OK with it.

    Training
True service dogs are chosen and well trained to behave well in all environments. Your pet knows only not to soil in its own home. Other buildings mean it’s okay to relieve himself when necessary. I saw a dog assist a wheelchair man who fed it ice cream every day. The dog deficated while it walked along side the patient. I’ve seen dogs walk and do the same in the Northbrook mall,a high end mall just north of Chicago ,as the owner ignored the event. Real service dogs go through a lot of training before being released to the owners.

    No
Disagree with Candy. True service dogs should absolutely be allowed. But pets? Nope. If you don't have someone to watch your pet while go to Vegas, don't go or go somewhere else.

    Dogs over humans
I’ll take most dogs over most humans everyday of the week , whether at a casino, store, hospital anywhere..

    Should I or Not?
    Dogs in Hotel Rooms Alone?
In my opinion when it comes to dogs, trained or not, caged or uncared and left in a hotel room, can cause havoc for others and their owners. I would rather dogs be with their owners out and about because dogs usually behave better in the presence of their owners than when they are caged or uncaring the room. Caged animals can still bark their heads off thus disturbing the peace of neighbors. Uncaged animals can cause damage to furniture and other items, thus causing their owners unnecessary expenses. Most dogs that I have observed out and about are completely well behaved in the presence of their owners. So it makes sense to management to allow pet owners the freedom that they desire. However, common sense is not too common nowadays in the days of our lives, in my opinion.

    rules
even service dogs have to follow the rules, no potty and no aggression. sort of like people.

    Housebroken
It is completely legal for any private establishment to remove any service animal that is not housebroken. Once the animal is removed the establishment may not refuse services to the owner.
Additionally, an establishment may remove any service animal that is not "under the control" of the person it is servicing (running around, misbehaving, etc.).

    Not allowed to count cards
Guy with service dog has a hard 10, glances down surreptitiously, the dog "woofs" slightly, and the player doubles.

Sam and Spot took the casinos for millions before they were discovered.

    unfortunately...
The (hordes of) people with the fake service dog vests or just claiming the dog as a service animal when it isn't ruin it and make it more difficult for the people that truly have and need their service animals.

    Mr JT
They should need proof that dog is been trained ,anyone can say it's a service dog ,a big scam to get around rules.Let them pay a fee for some sort of certification .

  • stephen rosol Oct-11-2025
    the certification is meaningless
I am afraid like many things, you can buy any certification you want---including for dogs -- just pay and the paper is yours. It comes down to honesty and character---which is slipping away in favor of entitlement and convenience.
