Question of the Day - 22 July 2023

Q:

Is the chain of small casinos named Dotty’s Casino still operating in metro Las Vegas? Who is Dotty?

A:

Yes, Dotty's is alive and very well in Las Vegas, along with Montana, Oregon, and Illinois. At last count, there were well over 200 in the four states.

They're not so much "small casinos" as bars with machines; Dotty's locations in Las Vegas have restricted gambling licenses, which means 15 machines or fewer.

Richard Esty, founder and chairman of Dotty’s parent company, Nevada Restaurant Services, came up with the name "Dotty's" in the mid-1990s. He did a study of his demographic target base, women aged 35 and older, to find out what names resonated best with them. "Betty" ranked second and "Dorothy" came in tops. Shorten "Dorothy" to "Dotty" and a strip-mall gambling franchise was born.

According to the company website, the name is meant to " invoke your grandmother's kitchen."

    Dotty's in Laughlin NV
I was in Laughlin last month, Dotty's owns the casino there named Laughlin River Lodge, it used to be the River Palms. It's a fair-sized hotel for Laughlin but the casino is kinda small, there are other casinos in Laughlin I like better. In addition to the hotel pool it has a sand beach on the beautiful Colorado River, an arcade room for teens, a bowling alley with 8 lanes, 3 different smallish casino areas, several places to eat including a Dotty's restaurant. I didn't see any table games, just slots and video poker machines, plus a bingo area. There's a sports bar with pool tables and a gamers room with pc's setup for computer gaming. Reminds me of a family type of place with plenty of things for teens and younger. Their BigHorn Cafe was a good place for lunch. They said the Dotty's corp had bought it back in 2014.
