Question of the Day - 31 July 2024

Q:

Recently playing a bartop at the book at Caesars, I did the "double up" option after hitting a straight. After winning that bet, it said (something like) "Double up limit reached" and sent me back to the regular game. Aside from the beating I’m sure the LVA collective will have -- bartops suck -- I know, there’s no edge on double up (that I know of). Have you ever seen this before?

A:

Our answer is no. We've never seen a screen that limits the double-up option.

Granted, we don't do double up much, but we asked around and others who play it occasionally have never seen it show up either. Certainly not after a single play.

That said, we would assume that the limit screen you saw is an option for the casinos/bars to use if they want to limit their exposure to a good run of double-up luck.

Also, we wonder how one would go about checking it. We suppose that you could play a nickel game and see how many bets you could make without any risk before you either lost the bet or were stopped out by the machine.

Also, in discussing this, we found ourselves speculating about how far a casino would want to go in giving you, as you rightly point out in the question, a vigless bet. There's no edge on double up, so how many coin flips will they make with you?

Now we put it out there for the wisdom of the QoD "collective." Have you even seen a screen that tells you you've reached a limit in your double-up betting?

    And more info…
The hand wasn’t a monster; it was maybe a straight or a flush on quarters.

    Double up limit
I have played one where the limit was 5 double ups. It was on a $1 denom.

    Wouldn't do it now
I witnessed a monster 3 or 4 time double up maybe 30 years ago, at Horseshoe Tunica. Today, the way machines are programmed (my personal belief only) I wouldn't dare double up.

But back in that day I used to double up on occasion, maybe once, rarely more than twice. Never saw a limit given.

    Doubly dumb
In the past, I've seen many machines where you were allowed to double up multiple times...but you LOST if the double up card was an exact match (rather than a push). So since that made the bet a 6% house advantage, no surprise that they allowed it. I tried it once on a nickel game, just out of curiosity, with a one-coin bet, and was allowed to do it three times before I quit. I made EIGHT NICKELS. Take THAT, Circus Circus!

    Limit by ?
I have never seen a limit either, though it has been a long time since I played one. I wonder if the limit is decided by amount rather than the number of times it is played? If I were programming it, I would want to limit the amount; the nickel player could double up their pair win for a lot longer than I'd want the $5 player to double up their straight.

    Old story
Many years ago, I was playing quarter VP at Resorts in Atlantic City. A lady playing the machine next to me hit a Royal Flush for $1000. The machine asked her if she wanted to double down. She accidentally pressed “Yes.”
She panicked! Called a slot attendant, then the slot floor manager. Both said basically, sorry, you pushed it, you have to play it.
So ….she pushed it. And she won! $2000 for the accidentally lucky lady. 😀
