What is happening with management at the Downtown Grand and will it remain a gambler friendly casino?
What's happening -- or more accurately, has happened -- at the Downtown Grand is that the general manager, Andrew Economon, no longer works there; he had to leave for personal reasons.
Economon, as LVA members might know (based on his appearance on a Beer Friday livestream, his ubiquity on the property, especially during the Thursday tournaments, and stories about him that we've linked to), was a great advocate for attracting customers to the off-the-beaten-path Downtown Grand by offering the old-school kinds of bargains and promotions for which Las Vegas was, and generally no longer is, known.
He instituted the weekly mini-blackjack tournament, which has become a meeting place for LVA members, as Anthony and Andrew participate every week. He followed that up with the video poker tournament that took (note the past tense) place right after the blackjack. He also pushed through a number of food and beverage bargains and hatched the idea of our valuable MRB coupon that waives the resort fee at DTG for LVA members.
Whether or not the Downtown Grand will remain a gambler-friendly bargain casino remains to be seen. But one thing that's transpired doesn't bode well: The video poker tournament has been discontinued.
We'll have to see what other developments occur down the road, which of course we'll report on.
The good news is that Andrew Economon will surface again at another property and that, presumably, will be good news for all.
