Question of the Day - 18 March 2026

Q:

What's happening with the Downtown Grand? It seems like there have been many rumors about the place being sold and even closing in recent years, but nothing has ever happened.

A:

The Downtown Grand is still owned by the CIM Group, founded in 1994 by two Israelis and an investment banker. According to Wiki, CIM "invests in commercial property on behalf of large institutions, such as pensions. As of December 31, 2020, the company owned $29.2 billion worth of commercial property."

Fifth Street Gaming operates Downtown Grand in a partnership with CIM. Fifth Street Gaming owns and operates several Las Vegas gaming locations, including Ojos Locos in North Las Vegas.

FSG management has always been extremely tight-lipped about the status of the Downtown Grand, which is in part why the media coverage has been sketchy, mostly reduced to rumors, innuendo, and indirect evidence, such as a listing on Berkadia.com the last time we answered this question in July 2024. At that time, the alleged asking price was $180 million. However, the listing quickly vanished.

Last summer, there were reports and rumors of financial hardships, including stopped payments to vendors and potential layoffs. In addition, table game and restaurant hours were shortened, all of which gave rise to speculation about a potential sale. Around that time, more rumors surfaced about talks of a potential sale to Penske Media (Rolling Stone's parent company), but that deal reportedly fell through fairly quickly, if it was ever serious.

That's where DTG stands today. The property is open and operational and nothing "dramatic," either reported or rumored, has happened for a while. If it does, we'll cover it in Vegas News.

Surprising that they're still in business
I'm surprised that DTG is still in business, they seem to have been struggling since they opened. Lousy location and even though they strive to be hip, all they really have is the pool/daylife thing, they can't compete with Circa and it's closed six months per year. They've experimented with loose games over the years (remember when they had dollar FPDW for like two weeks?) but not lately, and they've been dialing back on the promos.

I try to support them but they make it so hard...
I love little casinos like DTG but damn they make is so hard to like them. They have one guy at the rewards desk that is decent. The rest of them have no personality and are borderline rude. The free play offer that you get when you stay there is so difficult to use. When you ask what your offer is and how to use it they don't look it up in their system.. They make ME find the email and show it to them.. HUH? Then to use it is even harder.. Earn 10 points and then come back 24 hrs after you earned it to redeem it. Then earn 10 more pts and come back the next day etc. WTF?. It's so hard to figure it out and they don't really explain it well. The woman I spoke to literally wouldn't tell me what my offer was until I could find the email saying what it was. So damn frustrating. I will say the match play offer you get in the MRB is easy to redeem. As is the identical match play coupon you get when you stay there. They let you redeem both at the same time which is nice.

    Really like this place
As long as it lasts, I will continue to stay there. They comp me 3 nights whenever I ask and that includes weekends. Location is OK with me. Loved staying there when it was the Lady Luck.

    No Character
My issue with the Grand is that it's boring. So many influencers rave about it, but the walk from Fremont Street rarely seems worth it. I know some people like quiet, but I enjoy the energy of people playing. The inside just doesn't look inviting. I go simply because there's an LVA coupon and a couple of other codes you can mention at the rewards cage, but I don't think I've stayed there for more than an hour.

    PBR Special
I usually visit several times during my trip just to take advantage of the PBR ($3) or brat and brat/italian sausage and beer ($5) specials. Last October they offered a brat and a Sam Adams and brat for $5 which I thought was an excellent deal. The bartenders at the furnace bar are always friendly and take care of you if you take of them. I stayed there for wild card weekend using the LVA no fee coupon and had a great stay for a cheaper price than the 4 Queens.

    Nothing grand about it
It is a dump in my opinion. I tried to give it a chance a few years ago when the good casino manager was there. After he left it became really pathetic, and that's where it remains for me. I will not return there.

DG has been declining for years now
    Remember the Mob Bar?
Remember the gift shop next to where Mob Bar used to be - I think it was replaced with vending machines?
    How about Freedom Beat?
The fourth floor (which I assume isn't there for the same reason the 13th isn't either) isn't the only thing missing.

    Bad offers
I've put in some VP play there at large denoms, and the offers I get are silly. $75 in free play, but spread across 3 days. Sorry, $25 isn't enough to get me to walk over from Circa, where I'm busy with my $300 in FP and $150 in F&B.
The formula is simple: put out some decent teaser offers - see your traffic improve.
