Question of the Day - 02 June 2024

Q:

What's up with the Eastside Cannery out on Boulder Highway? As far as I can tell, it's the last casino in Las Vegas not to reopen after the pandemic that's still standing as was. In your considered opinion, will it ever reopen?

And

Is anything going on with the Cannery on Boulder Highway. Its lights are on now and then.

A:

Our considered opinion is that the reopening of the Eastside Cannery is ... improbable.

First, the EC (not to be confused with El Cortez) always seemed like an anomalous property to us, owned and operated by the company, Boyd Gaming, that also owns and operates Sam's Town, practically next door (only a KOA separates them).

Indeed, Boyd maintains not only that Sam's Town has absorbed all of the Eastside Cannery's players and customers, but they cite "excess capacity" at Sam's Town, meaning there's plenty of room left over there even after accounting for the EC's customer base. They also told the county commissioners that they have 400 job openings at their other Vegas properties that they can't fill, so it would require on the order of six months just to staff the Cannery.

Clark County recently approved a two-year extension for a number of business licenses associated with the joint, plus two six-month extensions as long as Boyd shows evidence of good cause. If Boyd keeps Eastside Cannery shuttered for the next three years, it will have been closed for seven years in total, since March 2020. If the company can't decide what to do with it by then, it looks like its life-support plug will be pulled. Which might be inevitable, considering that Boyd claims to spend around $6 million a year on keeping EC in order.

As for why the lights are on, the EC has been put to some use from time to time. During the pandemic, it was a distribution site for Three Square Food Bank. It has also served as a training location for Metro police and county fire-department personnel.

In addition, per state gaming regulations, it has to open four times a year, once each quarter.

    Bad Players Club
Since Boyd changed their players club Sams Town has very little appeal for me, as well as their other properties. As far as Eastside Cannery goes I'd like to see Boyd sell it off and get an owner in there who values every customers business, not just the high rollers.

    "We hate unions"
Big Boyd would have less trouble filling its open positions if they weren't so fanatically anti-union.

    Cheap cheap
400 openings at its other casinos in town is code for "pays its staff poorly".

Boyd's most recent changes to its loyalty program probably chased a lot of players away. No wonder they have excess capacity.

    No interest in Boyd now...
My wife and I used to go to Sam's Town fairly often when they had their cheap buffet, and would end up staying the day there playing. Haven't set foot in the place after they shut the buffet down, just don't see a reason to go there. And since they also destroyed their player's club program, there's no reason to visit any of their properties, IMO.

    KOA ???
What in the world is a KOA?

  • O2bnVegas Jun-02-2024
    @Al
KOA, something about campgrounds in the US. The 'campground' part is spelled with a capital K. Kampgrounds of America or something like that.

    Played there once
ON one of my trips to Las Vegas, I changed things up and rented a car, spending a couple of days hitting properties that weren't downtown or on The Strip. EC was one I went to, and I was quite...unimpressed. It just didn't stand out in any way. There were other places I played that day in that area that were much better--Sam's Town, Boulder Station, and Sunset Station.

I wish Boyd would sell it to someone who might care.
