Question of the Day - 01 August 2022

Q:

On QOD, some of the comments are quite lively and I like to participate on occasion. One of the things that bugs me is that we can't edit a post. I hate looking like a dummy with typos and punctuation mistakes. Why can't we edit our posts? Does the software you use not have this feature?

A:

That's correct: The LasVegasAdvisor.com content-management system doesn't allow user editing. That's limited to us content managers.

However, that doesn't mean you can't control the quality of your comments.

One suggestion is to type what you want to say into a word-processing file and proof your work. When you're satisfied with your comment, cut or copy and paste it into the comment box.

Another step you can take is to send us a note via the Submit a QoD button (just above the comments) or send an email to us at [email protected], noting the changes you'd like to make in your comment. We can and will go into the Comments application and make your corrections, then repost the comment.

In our experience, most readers either aren't looking for typos and punctuation mistakes or overlook them if they see them. But if you would like something you've posted amended, let us know and we'll handle it for you.

    No problem for me
    I never make typoos.

    Dialog box
While I often do write/edit elsewhere then copy/paste, sometimes I run into the max characters issue. At that point, the small size of the comment dialog box, along with a lack of scroll options, make editing before posting difficult.

    Mistakes?
Waaaaay back when, at a summer job while in college, I received a gift when I left. Someone gave me a very large eraser with the following words printed on it: I never make mistakes. I thought I did once, but I was wrong. That gift has kept me grounded.

    errors
that's fine, I rarely go back and look anyway. Typos and spelling are expected now.

“Typos and spelling are expected now”?
Does anyone here actually consider typographical errors, misspellings and syntactic gibberish desirable?

For Dave_Miller_DJTB : The comment box is expandable....
After having the same problem for several years, I accidentally discovered you can click on the lower right corner and drag to enlarge it, both horizontally and vertically.

    Cheers.

    re: gaattc2001
Thanks for that hint. This actually helps a lot!

    No problem, except my own.
The Forum platform allows for editing there, so thanks for that.

I hardly notice or care about others' misspellings, etc. It is just my own that make me cringe. LOL.

But you LVA guys are indeed quick to respond to a plea to fix something, which is much appreciated.

    gaattc2001--thanks
I echo Gregory's comment to gaattc2001 about expanding the box. It does make things much better. The problems with using something else to edit prior to posting the comment are time, inconvenience and availability. When we (at least I) see something to comment on, the reaction is more immediate than stopping, opening up software and copying and pasting. In fact, I don't usually notice any errors until re-reading it much later after going through all the comments.

    @gaattc2001
That dragging the corner trick only works on desktops. It doesn’t work on iPhone, and maybe not on android.
