Question of the Day - 27 December 2019

Q:

What is the relationship between El Cortez and the Station casinos? I see some Station promotions include El Cortez, but not others. With all the selling going on, did I miss the announcement? Also, at the bottom of the answer is your link to the new poll on which new developments you're most looking forward in 2020 and a bit beyond.

A:

No, you didn’t miss any announcement that Station Casinos bought up the El Cortez, which tells us it's "still a proudly independent" property.

“The only reason we’re in their promotions,” says El Cortez's Kenny Epstein, “is that Station runs our sports book. We’re only in their sports-book promotions.”

There you have it, straight from the mouth of the owner himself.

And here's your link to the new poll on which new developments you're most looking forward in 2020 and a bit beyond.

What is the relationship between El Cortez and the Station casinos?

    Being Independent
Therein lies the rub. I love the Tez because it is independent. But I worry about it. First, there are not many places to spend the comps. (Even though they are getting better with the places across the street.) My other concern is the state of gambling there. The Tez was always the outlier they had good table games especially Blackjack. But the last time I was there I saw the continuous shuffle machines and comps have gotten tighter. For the first time in over a decade, my next trip (twice a year visitor) will have me trying out some new places.

El is not what it was
Adam is right about the gaming at the Tez.
Was there on 11/15 a Friday and normally crap tables are at 5$ but now like the big boys they were at 10$ min bet.
I will find some were else to play.

    Independent, my ass
Almost the day that Stations took over, they started removing the good VP, they cut down on the number of single deck 3:2 tables, and worst of all, they cut the comps WAAAAAY back. I had been getting three free nights + $50 + meals every quarter from them for over fifteen years. When Stations ate them, suddenly, my offers dwindled to nothing--I think the last thing I got was 45 cents off weekday nights, half a beer, $.05 free play, and a stale donut. Then, I stopped getting any offers at all. I did receive a nice card in the mail from them: "Thanks for your loyalty over the years. Now, piss off!"

I have reciprocated their affections since then. The El Corpse is now #176 on my list of go-to Vegas destinations, right after #175, the West Las Vegas sewage plant.

    lotsa ElCo hate here
NOTHING in Las Vegas is how it “used to be,” including the El Cortez. Still the best DD blackjack downtown, definitely the best single deck in Las Vegas. $5 craps and $5 3/2 blackjack are on the way out all over the place - simple economics.
My ElCo offers have actually gotten better over the years. A few hours of green chip blackjack and a little video poker each day keep me fed and housed for free on my 3-4 trips a year. Just used comps to cover a great massage there also. And no, Stations did not “eat” the ElCo. Unfortunately they downgraded some of the VP all on their own, but there are still plenty of playable games.
