Question of the Day - 24 January 2025

Q:

Just returned to Las Vegas after being gone for six weeks and went over to Ellis Island for a little R and R. I was seeing some work being done on the outside (southwest corner) of the building. I did not give it much thought, but after entering from the garage, now I see that about a third of the interior is walled off for some kind of rework. Can you give us an idea as to what is going on?

A:

Happy to.

Ellis Island is undergoing an expansion and renovation to the tune of $35 million that was originally announced last April.

First, the casino is being enlarged by 6,500 square feet that will stretch, like Front Yard, all the way out to the Koval Avenue sidewalk. The new section will have space for more than 250 additional slot machines and a new pit area; it will also comprise a center bar, expanded sports book, back-of-the-house audiovisual area, and new south service entrance. In addition, the Village Pub & Café and the karaoke lounge are being remodeled and a new rooftop event space is being built.

Much of the expansion is happening in the space formerly occupied by the micro-brewery that was demolished early last year.

When it was announced last April, the project was expected to be completed "in early 2025," but based on what we can see of the construction, it looks like the deadline has been extended. A recent update in the Las Vegas Review-Journal indicated that there's "no timetable" for completion.

    Hidden gem
We often stay at Paris due to it's "center strip" location and we like the affordable stakes daily poker tourneys in the Horseshoe poker room. We've given up on playing blackjack in the strip casinos due to 6;5, etc. Such a short walk out the back to Horseshoe to Ellis Island (Tuscany with new 3:2 blackjack tables as well). Ellis Island has always had great beers, the Front Yard is great spot to watch sporting events like NFL and March Madness, and they always have $10 blackjack (even a $5 table) with 3:2 blackjack. It's become our go to spot to gamble "on the strip". Obviously we could play downtown, and do so one afternoon/evening on our trips, but hard to find better gambling near the strip. Would love to hear about any similar gems also within walking distance to the strip BTW.

    Not the Same
It’s not the locals, hard hat place it used to be. The steak and bbq are still top notch but it’s not the gambling friendly joint it used to be. To me, on my last visit, it seemed to be like any other strip joint

    Parking?
Any mention of the additional parking this expansion will require?

    7/5 Bonus Poker
A recent change is very sneaky. It appears to be regular 7/5 Bonus Poker but acloser inspection reveals that 5 through King only pays you 100 coins instead of 125. I checked multiple machines in The Front Yard and found this down grade to be common place.

    Slight error
The answer refers to the sidewalk on Koval Avenue. It is Koval Lane.

    What? No more microbrewery?
They demolished the microbrewery? No more sipping ales, Heifewesses - is that the correct spelling? - at the bar while playing video poker or root beer with my meal?

    There is no pub
Just so everybody knows: Even though Ellis Island is still using the term "Village Pub & Cafe", that is a misnomer, because there no longer is a pub; I don't know which year it ended, but the pub hasn't been there for quite a while. (I believe my first time eating there was 14 months ago, and it was already gone.) A pub will always have a bar, and usually also has an area with tables. There is no bar in this eatery; there are only tables; so it is only a restaurant. To avoid misleading anybody, we should refer to this place simply as "the cafe".

    my favorite always
my mandatory 1st stop every trip after landing. Must have a hefe--it is the best. Sure the place has evolved--I think for the best. The beer is amazing as always (just not brewed on site--moved offsite), and the Front Yard brought more variants. I think the vibe is still great. I miss the cups at the door to convert to roadies.

    They still have their beer...
...it's just not brewed onsite, the brewery moved to St. George.
