Question of the Day - 21 March 2023

Q:

Electrical-battery-operated cars are becoming much more popular. Are Strip casino garages offering sufficient number of recharging stations? Is there a single source of information on Strip electrical recharging stations?

A:

According to ChargeFinder.com, Las Vegas has 156 charging stations, each with from 1 (Meadows Mall Macy's) up to 12 (Clark County administrative building) charging units. ChargeFinder also specifies the type of chargers: Tesla only, Type 1 AC, and/or CHAdeMO/CCS for DC.

In early March, Tesla started allowing non-Tesla electric vehicles to use its supercharger network in the U.S. Customers with non-Tesla EVs can download the Tesla app, find the nearest supercharging station, and pay either by the charge or via a monthly subscription fee of $12.99. So ChargeFinder's info is a little out of date as far as the types of chargers, but its listing covers most, if not all, the stations around the city.

As for charging stations specific to the Strip garages, LasVegasThenAndNow.com has a list. It's not dated, but it mostly matches ChargeFinder's information, so we figure it's mostly accurate. It lists 25 garages on the Strip and three downtown with charging stations, with around 150 charging units in total, from one at Planet Hollywood to 43 at the high-tech LINQ.

     Complimentary zap
Sooner rather than later, the casinos are going to figure out that EV charging stations can be revenue sources--and meter them. Then they can make free charging a perk for Plutonium level or whatever players. Then, of course, take that freebie away as part of "improvements to our players' club."

    Behind the times
The casinos are doing a terrible job getting level 2 chargers on line and an even worse job policing and maintaining their existing chargers. Last time I was at Paris, they 4 chargers for a garage that holds thousands of cars. 1 cars never moved the 4 days I was there and 2 machines were broken. 1 working machine. In Atlantic City, there are no level 2 chargers in any of the Caesars properties.

    Tesla info incorrect
Tesla currently has no magic dock superchargers in Nevada. Ca and NY only with more to come. The 12.99 subscription only gets you a lower charge kwh rate. It doesn't include any charging

    First World Problems
Lots of EV owners are seeing that some people leave their car connected to the charger an unreasonable amount of time, like even after the car is fully charged they don't bother to move it so someone else can use the charging station. Big problem in some areas. The charging station automatically shuts off but that doesn't mean the owner has to move the car. It's a selfish thing, but expected that some people are that way. Maybe the charging station should somehow require a parking payment from the car owner if the car sits there an extended time after the car's battery is charged. Require a credit card to use the charging station, even if the elec is free the credit card could be billed for parking overly long. Incurring a cost might help with this problem.

What I really want in a casino
Free gas? How about a reasonable priced laundromat? I don't live in Vegas. The price hotels charge for laundry is more than my travel clothes are worth. I would save gas by not having to drive to a laundromat. Do you guys have AI? Something is suggesting the next word as I type my words of wisdom.
