I'm looking to be in Vegas for an extended period of time (8-10 weeks) and I'm finding it extremely hard to book a hotel for that long. It seems that none of the major players on the strip will take bookings for any longer than 2 weeks. I don't want to go down the Airbnb route but is there any easy way of doing this without having to make multiple bookings?
If you want to stay in a hotel, the answer, unfortunately, is no.
Nevada Revised Statute 116.31123 approves "the use of a unit for remuneration, as a hostel, hotel, inn, motel, resort, vacation rental, or other form of transient lodging," but only [emphasis ours] "if the term of the occupancy, possession, or use of the unit is for less than 30 consecutive calendar days."
Why 30 days? After staying in a room for more than 30 days, according to a different statute, guests gain "residency rights," which makes eviction more difficult if they stop paying.
So for both legal and practical reasons, the maximum length of time you can stay in a Nevada hotel room is 30 days, though most hotel companies, as you note in the question, have even shorter timelines of 14 days and at most 28.
One famous exception in history was none other than Howard Hughes, who lived for four years at the Desert Inn. When he checked in late November 1966, he was booked for the maximum 10 days. At the end of that time period, management approached him about checking out to make room for the DI's holiday-season high rollers. Hughes didn't want to move out, so he bought the whole joint — and stayed there for four years to the day, when he fled to the Bahamas. That’s an expensive way to get around NRS 116.31123, but it worked.
Meanwhile, what to do about an 8- to 10-week visit? Some hotels do allow 28 days, so you'd have to move only once for eight weeks. A quick check on Travelocity shows availability from April 14 to May 12 at: Motel 6 Tropicana ($78/night, $2,488 total); Downtown Grand ($99, $4,585); and Alexis Park ($117, $4,772).
You might want kitchen facilities, so you don't have to eat out 150 meals in two months, and in that case, timeshares or condos with full kitchens might be the way to go. Tahiti Resort, for example, has availability in June at $87 a night for 28 nights ($3,468), while Palms Place 28-day rentals go for $135 per night ($5,536).
Then there are three Extended Stay America locations. At these, you can stay the whole 8-10 weeks for around $55 per night and they have small kitchens with a full-size fridge, stovetop, and microwave. Some come equipped with dishes, utensils, pots and pans, and the like; at others, you have to request them, but they're free. The one on Valley View just south of Flamingo, an eight-minute walk to the Rio, Gold Coast, and Palms and, say, 20 minutes to the Strip, will run you $4,630 for 90 days between April and July.
Budget Suites gives you only 30 days at a time, but you can reup, depending on availability.
Siegel Suites can be a little rough; we've heard and experienced some bad things at these.
This should get you started. Let us know what you ultimately do and how it works out.
