Question of the Day - 14 October 2020

Q:

I am planning a two-week trip at least to Vegas, staying at the Flamingo 🦩. So that I don’t have to pack 2 weeks or more worth of clothes, what are my best options for doing my laundry without paying a small fortune using the hotel laundry service? I think that they charge $10 just to clean a pair of pants! Is there a reasonable wash-and-fold service near the Strip where I can drop it off and pick it up? Or better yet, have them pick it up and deliver it back to the hotel?

And at the bottom of the answer is your link to the new poll on the demographics of video poker players.

A:

After a bit of research, we've identified a few possibilities for you. But we have to warn you: These places know how much the hotels charge. That means they're less expensive, but not by much.

Cleanbay Cleaners is probably your best bet for pickup and delivery. They're located just south of McCarran Airport on Warm Springs and service "most neighborhoods" (which includes the Strip, we're told) and charge, for example, $2.80 for laundered shirts ($6.45 dry cleaned), $6.45 slacks, $6.70 blazer, $5.45 tie, and the like. They were a little short on delivery prices, saying it depends on how busy they are, but it sounds to us that you'd pay close to what you would having the hotel do it for you.

Similar is West Flamingo Fluff and Fold, out on W. Flamingo just past Jones. Their fluff-and-fold turnaround can take as little as two hours; they also offer pickup and delivery.

At Sparkle Cleaner and Laundry, 326 W. Sahara Ave., they don't offer delivery services, only dropoff and pickup only. This one is close to the Strip (right across the street from the Sahara) and it gets the number of good and bad reviews you'd expect, but English is definitely a second language there, so it was difficult to get specific details over the phone.

This will definitely get you started -- and please let us know how it all went for you, so we can pass it along for the benefit of other extended-stay Strip visitors.

Update 02 November 2020

This just in from the QoDer who asked the question: "I ended up renting a car because the deals were so good, so I followed your advice and used the West Flamingo Fluff and Fold for my laundry.

"With my rental car, I was able to drop off and pick up my laundry with a same-day turn-around. They charge $2 per pound with a minimum of $20, which includes their labor, detergent, washer and dryer costs. So to get your money’s worth, you want to have at least 10 lbs., but with a week's worth of laundry, that was no problem for me. If you use their pickup and delivery, they charge $10 each way, which is about the same as you would pay for an Uber ride each way.

    Tide cleaners
The manufacturers of Tide detergent has chain of dry cleaners and drop off laundry facilities throughout the nation and has multiple locations in the Vegas area. I use the one in Henderson. Good one day service with reasonable prices.

    Cheap alternative, but risky
Just go out to the airport baggage claim area, grab a suitcase off the carousel and take it into the restroom to see if it has some things that fit. If not then try again.

(just a joke but wouldn't surprise me if it's been done)

    W Flam Fluff
Take the 202 westbound and get off after Jones. DIY it’s a nice two hr break from the casino. I usually stay at the Flamingo and have done it for the last three years!

    Febreze spray
Febreze is your friend. Hang your top or other outerwear on a hanger, go over it with spray of Febreze, let hang overnight. Hang under a ceiling vent if there is one, or just over the shower rod. This can make a garment good for another wearing, depending on the fabric and if not heavily soiled. Try it.

This even worked for me back when cig smoke hung heavy in casinos. My garment would smell fresh the next day.

    Fluff
A few weeks ago on an eight day trip to Vegas, I used West Flamingo Fluff and Fold, out on W. Flamingo. Dropped off and picked up in about 2 1/2 hours. $20 for a full basket. They did good work and for a quick turnaround, I though $20 was reasonable.

    Laundry
If you have to dress to Nines you are screwed. There is no reason one cannot wear a good pair of jeans more than once. I have stayed 2 weeks before. You can wash underwear in sink or shower. You shower daily and have clean underwear. You don not have to change outer ware everyday. I just hang in closet and rotate. You can easily get 5 pair of slack and shirts in carry on suitcase. I have only used casino laundry one time. I stuck bottle of something in suit case and somehow it came open. Right very expensive. Of course women would have diff views I suppose. As a male that is how I handle it

    Clean clothes
Like a previous commenter, I’ve done my own laundry in the hotel room before. The dry Vegas weather helps them dry fast. Another tip: use comps if you have enough. If you do enough gambling at the property, (or any CET property) In the two weeks, can ask a host to adjust your bill at the end of your stay.

    learn how to pack
With shorts and T shirts you should be able to pack a large suitcase for two weeks. If you fly Southwest you could pack for a month..

    Cheapest
Have lots of local friends who let you use their washers/dryers. 😃.
I’m very lucky to have several. I always bring my own detergent, etc., though most offer to let me use theirs (I don’t).

The advantages of having a time share
Ten years ago, I bought a time share at the Desert Club on Koval Lane behind Harrah's. I bought it on Ebay for $1 plus $125 for the deed so I didn't pay the thousands of dollars upfront. The yearly maintenance fee is less than a week's stay in a hotel. It comes with a washer and dryer. We usually stop off at the Dollar Tree and get a small jug of laundry detergent (the stuff I wouldn't use at home, but it does the trick). It is great for if we decide to go to LA or Laughlin for the weekend after we check out before flying back to Pennsylvania.

    Bill;... Allentown
There's strip malls all over the place, even a couple blocks behind the Flamingo. Take a bus to a laundromat, do your own. Next door is probably a pizza or sub shop. Whats wrong with mingling..distanced but this can be fun!!! Cheaper than 'services'!!!!!

  • Oct-14-2020
    I agree with Kevin!
The Desert Club is the best timeshare in Las Vegas. You don't have to buy it to stay there. At redweek.com you can rent a 2 bedroom suite with over 1000 square feet for about $100 a night and live like a high roller. Each 2 bedroom suite has its own full size washer & dryer.

    Laundromats
Let me "second" the idea of using laundromats to do your own washing/drying instead of paying someone or some business to wash or dry-clean. If you have a car, you're really in business. If you don't, if it's feasible to take a bus, that will be cheap. But even if you have to take a taxi, the total cost could be less than if you don't do it yourself. The one time I stayed in Vegas for a long time (11 nights) I needed 1 trip to a laundromat, and as I was staying downtown, I went to a laundromat on N. Las Vegas Blvd. less than 1 mile away. I just took along something to read, and paid the small charge for a small vending-machine box of detergent. Very inexpensive trip.
