Question of the Day - 19 April 2023

Q:

With tickets sky high for seats to watch F1, what's stopping people from just standing on the sidewalks where there aren't any bleachers to watch the race?

A:

What will stop them, in most places, will be the barriers installed along the raceway.

Swiss-based company Geobrugg, which claims to be "the global leader in the supply of high-tensile steel-wire safety nets and meshes," has been contracted to supply the "mobile debris fencing" for the race. This will consist, presumably, of concrete barriers high enough to block the view of spectators standing on the sidewalks, plus cyclone fence panels on top to protect crowds from any debris flying up and off the cars.

The barriers will, reportedly, be assembled locally and installed starting in early October. So we'll start to see how extensive they are and what, if anything, can be seen through or above them in six or so months.

    ZOOOOOOM
Well, it's not like you could really see anything by just standing on one spot adjacent to the track, at street level. For that matter, you wouldn't be able to see anything from those $175,000 grandstand seats, either (or are they $200,000 each? I forget). Just a bunch of blurs going by.
As a spectator sport, zoomy zoomy auto racing (or whatever they call it) ranks below golf, and that's really saying something.
And for this brief exercise in testosterone consumption, they're going to totally fuck up Vegas traffic for the next six months. Somebody please explain why people who live in Vegas, AND tourists, should be dragged through a traffic nightmare just so a bunch of cars can go zomm zoom for a day or two. Besides, isn't there a perfectly good racetrack on the north side of town?

    An event for the elite
This F1 event was never intended for the ordinary tourist or race fan. It's all about the money that elite, wealthy people will pay to be seen and reported on as being in town during the race. Sort of like an exclusive Hollywood party or a Washington DC social gathering, the upper level rich folks will pay whatever it costs just to be seen there. I'll bet many of them that come to Vegas during this won't even sit for the full duration of the race watching it go round and round for hours. It's a buzz thing that for the most part attracts those that can easily afford such things, and the wannabees that want to proudly say they attended an F1 race. To be sure there will be true race fans in town that care about the sport, but that's not who this is for. Ordinary folks shouldn't expect a lot of accommodation for a peanut gallery.

    watching F1
I would think a sportsbook would be a better place to watch than on the street.

    better on TV
After attending two NASCAR races, husband (and I agree) decided it was better to watch them on TV. Agree with Kevin, unless you have sky box or other primo seats where you see everything including pit action, much better to watch on TV, instant (and multiple) replays, camera angles, commentary, etc. Otherwise just the blur of cars vrooming vrooming by now and then.

But, as mentioned, for die hard fans it is much more than that, and good for them. To each his own. But sitting hours in bleachers, cost, getting there, parking, the crowds, sometimes bad weather, price of snacks/breaking a leg to get to the concessions and back. Ah, well, again, die hard fans love all that and good on them.

    A corollary to original question
When will everything be taken down so that traffic, views, etc. will be back to normal?

    @O2bnVegas
My understanding is that live NASCAR events have two main draws for spectators: (1) permanent hearing loss sustained during the race and (2) the sex parties the night before in the camping area. Not necessarily in that order.

    Just curious
How much will the LIFT OFF ride cost during F1?
Probably the only best view of F1.
And for that money, how long up in the air?

    start time?
From what I find the race starts at 10pm or midnight. Why are they doing that or is that normal for F1? Is the whole race track going to have lights?

    "True RACE Fans?"
I can't wait to read the comments of NASCAR fan after this race if they have never seen an F1 "race". It's not really a "race" at all...more like a really fast PARADE with the cars FOLLOWING each other 95% of the time spread out around the entire 2+ mile track and MAYBE three or four significant passes during the entire "race". F1 is boring no matter where your vantage point is.

    What could possibly go wrong????

    a waste of time
This makes as much sense as if Vegas was hosting the Super Bowl, build a stadium, so they can play one game, then tear everything down. Only to re-build it to host the next year.

    re: Start Time
I was surprised, too, since 10 PM in Las Vegas is 7 AM in most of Europe, but the head of Formula 1 thinks it's a good idea. I wonder if somebody bothered to tell him that the race is going to be between 7 and 9 AM on a Sunday morning there, which means a lot of potential viewers will be in church for a good portion of it?

    Vegas experience
Make this a Vegas race. Let the tourists drive on the streets during the race, and a few crazy pedestrians stumble into the road. Don't forget orange cones and barriers blocking lanes for no reason. Traffic signals should be set to stop everything at every intersection at all times.
