Question of the Day - 30 June 2020

Q:

What is the status of the July 4th fireworks? Many towns near me are canceling. Will the Strip be putting on the usual show?

A:

At this late date, the traditional fireworks show from atop numerous hotel towers on the Strip has not been announced. We haven't heard that it's been canceled, but it doesn't look to us that it will be held.

Otherwise, the big fireworks show will go on as usual downtown at the Plaza at 10 p.m. on Saturday July 4. Launched from multiple locations atop the Plaza’s roofs and towers, the display can be seen from around the valley. To allow for prime viewing and increased pedestrian traffic, Main Street will be closed to traffic from Carson Avenue to Ogden Avenue a little before, during, and a little after the show.

Fireworks shows will also be put on Saturday night at Green Valley Ranch and Red Rock Resort, M Resort,  Lake Las Vegas, and Legacy Golf Course, all at 9 p.m.

    Meh
Does anybody really want to celebrate this country right now? With all the racial crap, protesters, Karen's and the political morons all around the country(red and blue). I'm not sure there is much to celebrate.

    Forever the optimist
I plan to celebrate the fourth of July, independence, and freedom. It does apply to all. Including me.

    Rick definitely has a point...
but I thought I'd add that the Laughlin "Rockets over the River" fireworks event was just cancelled. Unlike Vegas, it had been scheduled and they advertised room packages for it. Then it just got the axe.

    Why not?
Bravo Beachbum! We ALWAYS need to celebrate what is good about the country (and what SHOULD be good about the country). I believe that the one drawback to the typical fireworks would be the expense at a time when there is a need to cut back. I would rather a casino spent the money on employees.

    can't believe it
Nevada's virus numbers are rising. Why make them worse?

My city had already, some weeks ago, cancelled our annual "Pops On the River", a wonderful orchestral and fireworks event, due to the tenacity of the corona virus. While I hate that, I'm proud that they took the high road. We have had upsurges in the virus after every opening and every event that created congregating. I think most places have seen it, some more than others.

Despite the best intent, people seem to forget themselves when they gather. Human nature.

Nevada's positive cases were decreasing but now are increasing. Of course some can be expected after the openings. But this should be taken as evidence that openings/gatherings will feed the virus, not starve it. I'm not advocating closing casinos again (please NO!), just avoid things that create gatherings, worsen the numbers and result in another shut down. Keep Vegas open!

    Bunches o'idiots
ANY event that involves, or encourages, congregation should NOT be held or scheduled. If people gather to watch fireworks, more people will die. Gatherings cause infections.

Why on earth can't this simple fact get through our country's thick skull?

The show MUST, MUST GO ON??? In answer to thebeachbum, yeah it's all about you!!! The fact that Nevada has had an up tick in covid 19 cases doesn't mean anything. Glad to see someone in Laughlin still has some brains!!!

    4th of July
My city is planning on having a fireworks show but requiring people to watch from their cars in nearby parking lots or from home. They are also streaming it online and putting it on the city channel of cable tv. Not the same as normal times but still a way to celebrate the best country on planet Earth. As a veteran I appreciate the opportunities America has given me and being in the military all those years I can't turn my back now when things are rough. These bad times will eventually get better, the good in this country will overcome, just have to hang in there. Don't let current events shape your life.
