Why don't hotels use fitted bottom sheets on guest beds? I'm a restless sleeper and every time I stay in a hotel, I wake up to find that I'm sleeping on the mattress pad or worse, on the mattress itself. It seems a simple matter to use fitted sheets that stay put.
Many, if not most, hotels eschew using fitted bottom sheets for a number of reasons -- practical, logistical, and financial. Rather, they use flat sheets for both the bottom and top sheets on guest beds.
Flat sheets are easier to wash, fold, and store. They don’t have elastic corners, which can get tangled or stretched out in the wash, so they usually require more frequent replacements. They don't shrink in the wash, making them harder to tuck into corners. And they're much trickier to fold and stack. In addition, they're versatile, often doubling as bottom and top sheets, and they can fit a wider range of bed sizes, which reduces the need for maintaining an inventory of different-sized fitted sheets, thus simplifying the ordering and distribution processes.
All that said, the more expensive luxury and boutique hotels do use fitted sheets to cater to guest preferences. There's no doubt that, as you indicate in the question, they provide a more snug, secure, and wrinkle-free sleeping experience.
