Question of the Day - 22 March 2020

Q:

I just picked up Gambling 102: The Best Strategies for All Casino Games, Second Edition. It certainly delivers what's claimed in the subtitle, but my question concerns the choice of games. It is understandable that Caribbean Stud was dropped in the second edition — it has been near extinction for years (and deservedly so). But why were Casino War, Let It Ride, and Texas Hold ’em dropped? Aren’t these games still popular?

A:

[Editor's Note: Only one person could answer this question: Michael "Wizard of Odds" Shackleford, author of Gambling 102, both editions. Take it, Mike.]

At the time of writing, I had to cut some material to make room for new games in order to keep the book a manageable size.

According to my table-game survey, there are only 13 Casino War games left in the greater Las Vegas area. As for Let it Ride, I must admit counting 34 placements. While I respect your point, I believe the game will continue its decline and was barely worthy of inclusion. Texas Hold 'em has never been my strong suit (pun intended) and didn't have anything new to say about it beyond what was in the first edition of the book. It was my goal to give the book a complete makeover.

Why did the new edition of Gambling 102 drop Casino War, Let It Ride, and Texas Hold ’em?

    let it ride
    I have played LIR across the country and hate that it's fading away but I understand leaving it out. The versions change constantly and the demand is so high that table limits just get higher.

    Have you heard the rumors about this Covid-19 or something?
    Each day, the surreal nature of these QoD questions that ignores the elephant in the room grows faster than the virus infection rate.

    But I'll play along. Here's my question: Could you tell me where I might still be able to find a Sigma Derby game? I'm coming to Vegas next week, and I sure would like to play that game for old time's sake.

    Sigma derby
    Last one is on the second floor of The D. There are a few clones around.

    Let if Ride
    I play Video Poker about 95% of the time I'm gambling. I almost hate to admit it, but I love Let it Ride! Been playing it for 20+ years now.

    Surreal?
    Really? Have you looked at the blogs and Vegas News items? They deal almost exclusively with the state of things relative to closures and the virus. Are we supposed to make every QoD reference it as well? Are we supposed to suspend QoD because of it? These are questions that have been in the queue for a long time and we run them as we would normally. If a relevant question about the current state of things comes in, we'll jump it in line, but we're not otherwise halting everything else. Why would we do that?

    Sigma Derby
    @Annie:
    You’re going to Vegas next week to play Sigma Derby? Have you not heard the news that Vegas has shut down?

    @Dave:
    Yes, the last Sigma Derby game in Vegas is upstairs at the D. The clones you speak of are an entirely different design and allows many more types of bets - similar to real horse racing. However Sigma has a clunky charm all to itself. One of the draws to it is the clunkiness and an amazement that the damn thing runs. 😜

    Annie
    Annie- I think the most surreal part about your comment is that you think you’ll be gambling anywhere in Vegas next week. You do know every single casino in the state is shut down until at least mid-April right?

    @ Anthony Curtis Pt. 1
    Thank you for responding.

    I haven't looked at the other parts of LVA recently. I think I've read on LVA, that the QoD is, by far, the most frequently visited LVA page. I have the QoD bookmarked and go to it -- and only it -- every day for my short and quick Vegas fix. My guess is that this is how many, if not most, LVA readers experience the site on a daily basis. For that reason, the QoD is a website unto itself -- even if there are many other pages on LVA -- and that's why the QoD should be providing TIMELY answers.

    "These are questions that have been in the queue for a long time and we run them as we would normally." That's what I think is the mistake. The questions in the queue are no longer relevant. You should, imho, be flexible enough to chuck those questions and substitute relevant ones.

    There must be dozens of questions locals & tourists want answered. Are you saying that *no one* is asking the QoD about the implications of the pandemic on Vegas? Here are a few off the top of the head of this QoD reader:

    Do the financial gurus think the gaming companies will have to declare bankruptcy? Which ones are more vulnerable?
    Should the government bailout gaming companies?
    How will the governments of Nevada or Vegas survive without taxes from gaming?
    What's happening to housekeepers, dealers etc.?
    How are hosts keeping their customers during this "hiatus?"
    When Vegas reopens, will the virus turn out to be the deathknell for parking, resort fees and 6.5:1 BJ?
    Have mailings from slot clubs stopped or slowed down? Are they sending free room offers for future dates?
    Caroline Goodman seems to be at odds with Gov. Sisolak. She wants a very short time frame for casino closings that are much shorter than health experts want. What's up with that?
    My 1k characters are up.

    Oh, please, NO!
    Yikes!
    Thumbs down on dedicating QoD to virus-only questions. Lordy, one cannot turn this way or that without being peppered with C-19 elephants. QoD is an oasis from all that.

    LVA is giving us plenty of Vegas meets Virus. That running Blog for one. And who first advised us (me, at least) that the control tower at McCarran was shut down? Vegas News. I check that section obsessively. And appreciate all of it. But keep QoD just as it is.

    Thanks Anthony and staff
    I hesitated to comment, but it got to be too much. The QoD's ARE relevant because they still help prepare us for when we can return to casinos and Vegas. And when things re-open I'm sure LVA will be at the forefront of letting us know, including changes, deals, bankruptcies or anything else that comes up. In fact, since everything any of Annie's questions can probably be answered with "too early to tell". And IF anyone from a casino would actually answer your calls during this time, I would guess you wouldn't get an answer from them anyway. So, I believe that Annie's supposes are less relevant than the QoD's that you run.

    Wizard of Odds
    I think it was a mistake of Mr. Shackleford to eliminate the information for games still being offered just to keep a book at a certain length. He is the last word when it comes to game odds, after all he is the Wizard of Odds. That being said, his book ends up not being the definitive last word on table games since it is missing information. It also suggests that since it was already covered, readers of the second edition have already purchased or read the first edition which is not true at all.
