Question of the Day - 28 November 2020

Q:

Part 2 of our favorite QoDs: gambling songs

A:

Yesterday, we fielded a question about our own favorite QoDs. It contained a suggestion that we post a few reruns to give ourselves a breather -- in the never-ending progression of the nearly 5,400 questions we've answered over the past 16-plus years.

So here's today's staff favorite. Long-timers will remember it from the days of the QoDmother, Jessica Roe, or at the very least will recognize it as her indefatigable handiwork. It was first answered all the way back in 2006 and has been updated four times since; it now includes 125 songs, which we've alphabetized for easy reference.

Not a member so I could not comment on your 28 November question of the day.....but please add “down in Mississippi” by Sugarland to your list of gambling songs. It’s a great song!!!

  • Kevin Lewis Nov-28-2020
    Another one
"I Take My Chances" by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Pretty much embodies the gambler's philosophy.

How you managed to miss ...
... "Roller" by April Wine is beyond me. The first verse is literally about a trip to Las Vegas.

Gonna catch a flight to Nevada
Leave her friends at home in L.A.
    Seven come eleven or blackjack
Gamblin' every night and day, yeah
'Cause she's a roller, now, a high roller baby
Mmm, she's a roller, yeah, a high roller baby
    Alright, woo!

    MY FAVORITE
Beating the odds by Molly Hatchet. It's the title track from a great Southern Rock album. 👍

    More updates?
You say 4 updates, and then see we all the suggested additions by commenters. Maybe it's time for update #5. And it all goes to show you that gambling makes a fascinating subject for a song. By the way, it doesn't matter who covers Viva Las Vegas. It will ALWAYS be Elvis.

    Viva LV
For years on every trip when I picked up the rental car and was headed to the hotel I'd drive down the Strip with Elvis singing Viva Las Vegas, I had it on a cd and a thumb drive in my carryon bag and I set it to play in a loop. Further back in time I had it on an mp3 player that transmitted an FM signal to the car radio on an unused station. It got to be hard to find an unused FM channel in Vegas, they have a lot of radio stations on the air. Playing that song was always an upbeat way to get into vacation mode and forget the world for a while.
