Question of the Day - 17 October 2019

Q:

In his August 28th Stiffs and Georges column, David McKee wrote about how July revenue was up on the Strip, Downtown, North Las Vegas, the Boulder Highway, and miscellaneous Clark County. I’m curious as to which casinos/gaming establishments make up each area. For example, is the M Resort and Green Valley Ranch included in the Boulder Highway numbers or in Miscellaneous County? Where are the Summerlin casinos included? Where do chains like Dotty’s fit in?

A:

To answer your last question first, Dotty’s and its ilk are counted among the casinos where they're located, as you shall see, thanks to data provided by Michael Lawton of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Wild Wild West?!?
You listed that among Strip casinos. Wasn't that demolished years ago?

  • Kevin C Oct-17-2019
    Oops
Disregard my earlier comment. I mixed up that one with the place that used to be just south of Circus Circus

    Paris
Please add Paris to the Strip casinos.

    Confirmation Indeed
Finally, a definitive answer to a long time question. The Strat is not on the Strip.

    Mmmmm
The Mmmmm Resort (that's my name for it, because of the great buffet) isn't really in any of those areas--putting in on the "Boulder Strip" is quite a stretch. I would list it under Clark County.

Also, what happened to South Point?

  • Patrick McCann Oct-17-2019
    South Point
Kevin beat me to it. Was going to ask about South point.

  • Deke Castleman Oct-17-2019
    South Point
Like Silverton, South Point is categorized in Clark County. It, along with Paris, has been added. Thanks for the sharp eyes.

    The Peppermill?
Surprised to see The Peppermill listed. Does it have slot machines? I've been in there a few times and not seen or heard any. Maybe back in the lounge?

I certainly don't mean to tell the GCB their business...
but some of these raised an eyebrow. Ellis Island, Wild Wild West (still there last time I went by), Palace Station, Silver Sevens, Tuscany, Westgate, and Hard Rock are considered "Strip"? Rio, Gold Coast, and Palms are "Strip" but Orleans is not? Well, it is just a little farther away. Sahara is "Strip" but Strat is "Downtown"? OK.... Green Valley Ranch and M Resort are "Boulder Strip"? Silverton, Cal-Nev-Ari, and Primm Valley are "Clark County Miscellaneous," but South Point and Gold Strike (Jean) are nowhere to be found?
Laughlin and Mesquite aren't there either; but they weren't mentioned in the original question, and probably have separate categories of their own. Obviously any grouping like this has to be a little arbitrary.
So for statistical purposes, "Strip" means "on or near the Strip, but not too far South"; and "Boulder Strip" means "South Las Vegas."
Got it--and thanks for the update.

    Orleans
Where is the Orleans listed. Strip casino?

  • [email protected] Oct-17-2019
    Order?
Great list (thank you!) but would it be possible to rearrange it in alphabetical order? The current random order makes it hard to find specific casinos. It took be three times to find Ellis Island, and I still haven't found Encore.

    Nonetheless, a valuable tool!

    M Resort on Boulder Strip?
I would agree with Kevin that listing the M on the Boulder Strip is a stretch. I'd think it belongs in the Clark County (misc.) category.

Westward Ho, gone but not forgotten.
An above commenter posted, "I mixed up that one [Wild Wild West] with the place that used to be just south of Circus Circus.

That would have been the late, great Westward Ho. As Vegas imploded its downscale properties, replacing them with its current mega resorts (and mega resort fees), the 'Ho, as it had been affectionately known, became a favorite whipping boy for fans of the new Vegas who regarded Vegas as a classy destination for those with discriminating taste. (Never mind that for people who actually knew classy towns like New York, San Francisco, London and Paris, the new Vegas was just a crude simulacrum of those cities.)

But for those who used to come to Vegas BECAUSE OF Vegas's tackiness, the 'Ho was a gem. It was stupid, cheap, garish, ridiculous and lovely.

    QOD...show/dinner.
    I enjoyed the dinner and a show,downtown.
    MURDER? Great!
One of the cast members asked me about HOW to kill someone. I said poison. It was a casual question, while I was standing at a
    porcelain fixture.
    The dinner/show was $80.
