Question of the Day - 06 October 2025

Q:

Recently, the Golden Gate removed all of their live table games from the casino floor. I’m sure many of us are wondering about the status of their outstanding casino chips.

A:

We went straight to the font of Golden Gate knowledge, owner Derek Stevens, who told us, “We’ve got, basically, a full locked cage of chips. We don't plan on retiring them as of now. We can’t give them out. No one can come in and buy them. There’s no way for anyone to get chips any longer.

“By not retiring the chips, they will continue to be good and valuable, able to be turned in at the Golden Gate cage, The D, or Circa. Anyone who has chips at home will still be able to get value for them when they come to one of our properties. By not retiring them, there’s no deadline for redeeming them.”

Asked about the customer response to the removal of live tables, Stevens replied, “Every time you do something new, everyone’s gonna hate it. That’s what happens here.

"We did a good amount of new construction — a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff with regard to power and jackhammering the floors, some new carpet, a new sound system. We had everything kind of ready for the grand opening of the new concept on September 19 and we’re going from there.

“Electronic table games are part of the mix,” Stevens said of the changes. “It’s certainly not the whole thing. We’re bringing in a lot of higher-denom slot machines — popular ones like Spooky Link and $100,000 Dragon Link. We’ve brought in a couple of Million-Dollar Dragon Link. We’ve brought in a lot of the more popular games that we never had at Golden Gate.

“We’re really trying to upgrade the Golden Gate and turn it into a very interesting place to hang out … kind of a speakeasy feel to it,” Stevens concluded.

    Interesting
Interesting on the chips. And the blunt truth, "“Every time you do something new, everyone’s gonna hate it. That’s what happens here."

I remember when TITO came along, so many people flipped out. Yet people adjusted and frankly it's preferred by most vs handling coins and paper money. I'm frankly surprised it took this long for a casino to move away from table games to electronic. Look around, downtown and the strip, so many tables are empty. Been noticing that for years. A new generation prefers something different I think is one aspect. Of course not having to hire and pay live dealers helps the bottom line is another biggie for sure. Casinos are after the new generation's money, not old timers I think is another blunt reality here. They are not the now and future money stream. Nothing lasts forever in everything and anything. Life moves on, Elvis impersonators fade, EDM and DJ's in clubs take their place, for better or worse.

    One advantage
If the electronic games pay the same as regular games, you save money by not having to tip.

    Electronic
As a craps and blackjack player I have no reason to ever go to the 'Gate again. Electronic? Easy no. I don't play slots either. BORING. I like the social aspects of gaming, especially craps. It's an added bonus. Interacting with other players and dealers. I especially love locals casinos, that's where the real characters hang out, not the fanny pack crowd on the strip.

    Stupid
I will never walk into the GG again. Removing the table games was stupid in my opinion. What used to be a fun place will now become a sad boring space.

    Match Play chips
What is the status of the outstanding Golden Gate Match Play chips? Will I be able to use them at the Circa or the D casinos?

  • David Sabo Oct-06-2025
But what about the $25 huge table game matchplay chips??
Are thebig green and black $25 Golden Gate matchplay chips now good at the D or are we stuck?? Asking for a friend.

    The Demolition Continues
The Golden Gate has gone too far. All of the decent video poker has been removed/down graded, no onsite food outlet, no "live" gambling - only machines for the "cell phone" generation. If you are brainless the carnival games fit perfectly with your hatred of money. The place will soon become a memory of what Vegas had to offer. Chalk up another casino ruined by bean counters.

    Don't Give Them Ideas
Re Albert Pearson: as of now, you don't have to tip the machines, but you can be sure they are working on it.

    lower min
One thing I forgot to mention, and surprised no one else sees a major advantage to the electronics....lower, often, much lower min bet required. I know that's a gripe here often, and valid I think. I see craps electronics, blackjack, etc. at $1-$5 in most of these games. Try that most anywhere today. Plus the advantage of some grumpy clown glaring at you when you "took his card!" or whatever in blackjack. Or you roll the dice and 7 out, the glares you will see. Who needs that? I don't, too many serious nitwits out there at a game of chance like craps in many cases taking it way to serious. For the socializing impact, often these electronic craps games have 4-6 games linked in a circle, I see people chatting all the time/socializing. So all is not lost, there's advantages. Age 23-low 40's much favor electronics over live tables and that's the beginning and end, casinos must cater to the cash flow, give the $$$ people what they want. I read data shows people play much longer on them too.

    My ears are still ringing
We stopped by for the Start Your Night Here promo last Tuesday. Great crowd. First look at the new floor. Hoy cow, was the music loud! Insanely loud. We were there three or four minutes and had to bail. We're wondering if it's always like this, or just for the promo hour.

With or without the live tables, I really like the GG. Old school, tiny rooms. As "historical" as a Vegas resort can get. Great location. Will miss seeing the filming location for Jason Statham's blackjack play in Wildcard. At least we still have Jill St. James' water balloon carnival game at Circus Circus.
