Du-Par’s closed almost a year ago at the Golden Gate. When is a new restaurant going to be to be put in?
We get this question occasionally, along with others about the plans for 18 Fremont, the current designation for the big new casino project across Fremont Street from the Golden Gate. We try to answer them, but normally, dealing with the Stevens group, which owns the Golden Gate and is building out 18 Fremont, is an exercise in frustration, involving unreturned phone calls and a general air of disinterest.
In this case, however, a Stevens associate was back on the phone to us in minutes. Alas …
… no news is bad news. We were told that the Stevens group has no plans for the Du-par’s space (which, we suppose, is news in itself).
Though die-hard Du-par's aficionados don't consider it a real version of the famed eatery serving L.A. residents since 1938 (the 70-year-old Studio City location, the first expansion after the first incarnation opened in the Original Farmer's Market, closed last month), another Du-par's remains open at the Suncoast.
