Question of the Day - 01 July 2022

Q:

I was wondering if you have any details about The Tank aquarium at the Golden Nugget pool. What kind of fish are in it, what is the capacity in gallons, and does the GN subcontract tank maintenance and fish care or to they have a full-time staff to handle such duties?

A:

The Golden Nugget's $30 million HideOut pool complex features the 200,000-gallon shark aquarium. You can actually take a little thrill ride through the Tank on an enclosed water slide. It goes by fairly quickly at the end of the ride, before you splash down into the pool.

You also used to be able to take a $50-per-person behind-the-scenes tour of the Tank. It closed and we were told that the Nugget doesn't know when or if it will reopen.

At least when the tour was running, the Tank hosted five species of sharks: black-tipped, Tiger, sandbar,  zebra, and nurse, 14 sharks in all. The aquarium is also home to scores of exotic fish that co-exist with the sharks, which apparently don't each that much and are well fed enough that the other fish are relatively secure.

The tours were led by one of the marine biologists who worked directly for the Golden Nugget; in other words, the casino didn't, and probably still doesn't, subcontract the care and feeding of the fish and sharks, which are, yes, full-time jobs.

Maintenance also has to be performed on the complex filtration system the aquarium uses. Tour-goers also got to see the GN team in action, preparing shark food.

At the end of the tour, everyone received a souvenir shark tooth.

    Aquariums are fun
Typo in 3rd paragraph "which apparently don't EAT that much".
    .
I think there is/was an adults-only topless sunning area above the Golden Nugget shark tank.
The GN shark tank itself is a very entertaining attraction, kids especially love it. Likewise, the aquarium at Silverton is also terrific, especially at times when a mermaid is inside the tank taking questions from the kids. Both are worth the effort to get off the Strip and visit.

    don't each that much
I started going to the GN back in the late 60s, enjoyed it when Wynn owned and ran it, met him once. This was a Gambling Joint now it looks like a kid's amusement park. No Thanks!!!

    Tank aquarium?
Sorry, but this doesn't sound either interesting or practical to me. First, if you submerge tanks in water, won't they rust? Second, tanks trying to move around on wet sand just aren't as graceful as fishing swimming around in the water. Third, tanks are always the same drab military color, while fish are very colorful and thus more beautiful to look at.
