Question of the Day - 24 July 2025

Q:

About the Guardian Angel Cathedral in Las Vegas. Who designed the stained glass windows? It looks like they're covered on the outside. Is this to protect them from being damaged? If so, how do they get their light?

A:

The stained-glass windows at Guardian Angel Cathedral in Las Vegas were designed by Isabel Piczek, an artist renowned for her work in ecclesiastical art, often collaborating with her sister Edith, who created the cathedral’s mosaics. The Piczek sisters Edith, were born in Hungary, where their father was a noted artist and art professor, and they graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. They fled to Rome, then Canada, and finally Los Angeles ahead of World War II and spent their careers creating sacred art.

These windows, set within the cathedral’s A-frame structure, depict the Stations of the Cross and incorporate unique elements, such as gambling themes and Las Vegas casino imagery, for example in “The Cosmic Christ” window.

Regarding the exterior covering, some sources, along with direct observations, suggest the windows may appear covered or protected on the outside, likely to shield them from environmental damage, vandalism, or the intense Nevada sun, which can fade colored glass over time. While we couldn't find any specifics to confirm the use of protective coverings at the Guardian Angel, this is a common practice in historic churches with valuable stained glass. Protective glazing, such as clear or tempered glass, is often installed externally to preserve the artwork, while allowing light to pass through.

The windows still receive light. Any protective covering is typically transparent or translucent, designed to let sunlight illuminate the stained glass, while filtering harmful UV rays. The cathedral’s east-west orientation enhances this effect, as sunlight pours through the windows throughout the day, creating its vibrant displays. Given the emphasis on the windows’ glowing appearance in many of the reviews we read, natural light through protective glazing is the most probable answer.

    Through a Glass . . .
A 'Glowing Appearance', from the inside. Once back to the outside, it stays with the beholder.
