Question of the Day - 02 July 2019

Q:

With the thousands of taxicabs cruising up and down the Strip all day and night, why haven't I ever seen anyone hail a cab from the sidewalk? In New York, people sometimes jump into the middle of the street to get an available cab's attention. Strange that no one does it in Vegas.

A:

Yes, strange but true. Safety laws prohibit taxicabs from stopping on the Strip to pick up passengers from the sidewalks or corners, thus the plethora of taxi stands at resorts, shopping centers, and attractions.

Cab drivers can be ticketed for stopping on the Strip to pick up a fare. With no pullover lane and constant traffic, it's a whole lot safer for all involved to grab a cab at a designated taxi stand.

    What's really strange
is that more New Yorkers aren't killed by the cab they jump in front of or institutionalized for insanity.

    Hail a cab? NO.
I did that downtown and a cop saw the cabbie and really chewed him out!

    Hailing taxis in NYC

New Yorkers are taxi matadors. They know how to get as close to the taxi as necessary without being gored by it. They learn this from an early age by observing their elders. Then, they practice on Staten Island where it's quieter before moving on to the big league: Manhattan.

Fun Fact: Studies have shown that hailing cabs in NYC is safer than taking a photo of a "showgirl" or Sesame Street character on the Strip without paying them.

    Keep the herd safe
Las Vegas authorities are greatly concerned with the safety of Strip visitors who wish to hail a ride, because someone run over by a cab is unlikely to put ANY money in a slot machine for several days--a grievous loss for the casinos.

Now that I think of it, why aren't hospital rooms equipped with slots? It can get boring in there. Just think: hospital-wide progressives; multiple-point days for people with multiple injuries...

    Is it just the Strip?
I remember trying to hail one on Tropicana, pretty much right in front of the Wild Wild West casino, to no avail.
