What’s the status of the Neon Boneyard (now Museum) acquiring and refurbishing that colossal Hard Rock guitar? Won't it tower over everything in the neighborhood? Were they able to raise the $350,000 needed?
Yes, the 80-foot-tall guitar, which served as the beacon for the Hard Rock Cafe on the corner of Paradise Road and Harmon Avenue between 1990 and 2017, towers over the neighborhood, but evidently has not raised any hackles in the vicinity of the Neon Museum, at least not that we've heard. It's certainly the largest historic sign in the Bone Yard.
The renovation of the sign was finished in early March; it was lit up for the first time in the Bone Yard on March 4 at a private launch party. It opened to the public a couple days later.
Dawn Merritt, marketing director of the museum, tells us, "We are still raising money for the ongoing maintenance of the guitar.”
If you’d like to help, go to neonmuseum.org/events/hard-rock.
Funding is still needed to establish an endowment for the ongoing maintenance and care of the sign. We’re sure they’d appreciate the largesse.
