Question of the Day - 20 March 2020

Q:

I love to ride horses. Is there anywhere a person can actually ride a horse around Vegas? I don’t mean a slow-paced, ambling, trail ride that's one step away from being on a carousel as far as excitement goes. I want some galloping involved!

A:

If you don’t own your own horse, you’re SOL in Sin City.

We called a number of horse schools, trail rides, and stables and couldn’t find a single one that would let you go all out. Sample responses were as follows:

“It’s pretty rocky out there and anything more than a walk would hurt the horses.” (Cowboy Trail Rides)

“Not all horseback riders are the same and we like to keep the group together for tourism purposes.” (Wild West Horseback Adventure)

“Those days are long gone. The insurance companies have taken over.” (Talisman Farm)

“We wouldn’t be interested in that liability.” (Kyle Canyon Ranch)

Ah, the magic word: liability. It’s highly improbable that any provider that puts you on a horse around these parts is going to want to take the risk of your being thrown off and getting hurt.

Your best bet is to sign up for riding lessons. If your instructors deem you sufficiently adept aboard a horse, they might let you cut it loose, but that’s a big if. And if you're visiting, it's simply impractical.

Ironic, isn't it? We might have found the one thrill that’s too risky even for Las Vegas.

Is there anywhere a person can actually ride -- meaning galloping -- a horse around Vegas?

    IF!
If you have your own experienced trail horse.
If you have competed in the Rubicon and placed in the top ten finishers.
If you have a trained medic and experienced rider to follow you.
And if you can get the BLMs permission.
You might be able to run with the Mustangs on your own or take part in the next roundup.
    Maybe!

    Also
People come to Las Vegas to gamble and this is a huge gamble against getting caught or getting away with it.
You would have to own your own horse but you could go at a full gallop (with street horse shoes on) up or down Las Vegas Blvd. If you don't get caught right away then quickly leave the State.
If you do get caught you are looking at charges of Reckless Endangerment, Cruelty to Animals, and charges stemming from accidents caused, huge fine$, imprisonment, public outrage, restitution, loss of horse, horse trailer, and tow vehicle. But it's not all bad as you would have your 15 minutes of infamy. Be in nationwide news and possibly assassinated by animal rights organizations. Pretty expensive gamble EH!

    Downtown
I guess if you have the right connections, you can ride a horse nearly anywhere in Vegas.
I saw, what I guess, was a Hollywood star riding a horse along Fremont Street one evening not long ago.

    Them cowboys never galloped
Why not? Unless you're galloping down a sidewalk or through a parking lot or something, it's horribly dangerous. The horse hits a rock or a hole, it stumbles, and you turn into a projectile. Wild horses run because if they do stumble, they just get banged up a little. But the guy up there on the back of the horse has to deal with gravity AND the horse's speed and stop both by planting his face on the lonesome prairie.

    Maybe look north
I'd think it easier to find something like that in Reno than Las Vegas. I remember visiting Reno years ago and seeing a man walking around looking like he was dressed for a western movie shoot with his six gun and holster with a strap around his leg. All he was missing were the spurs.
