Question of the Day - 30 July 2025

Q:

My wife’s Golden Nugget Atlantic City host invited her to his "Host Birthday Party" in early August. Is this a common type of promo in the casino industry?

A:

Janet Hawk, director of player development for Raving Consulting, responds.

“In my previous life as an executive host, we regularly held host birthday parties. They were themed and it gave us an opportunity to have a personal experience with our guests.

“Each host usually partnered with another whose birthday was in the same month or close. The hosts then selected a theme, which included costumes. Because each property I worked at had different gift policies, we included this in the invite (please no gifts, just your presence is enough, etc.). I always preferred to have a donation to my favorite charity.

“Mine was a 50th birthday celebration and, because my guests knew I'd been a professional rock-and-roll singer in a previous life, I got a band together and we were the entertainment. The theme was ‘Heaven and Hell.' Two other hosts also participated. They were angels and I was a devil.

“Guests received a party gift and could choose between a halo or horns on entering the party. We split the room (one side Heaven, the other Hell) and each side was decorated appropriately, including food. For example, the Heaven side had a mashed-potato bar, angel food cake, etc. The Hell side had hot wings, deviled eggs, etc. Our graphics team was really amazing in designing the decorations and invitations. The guests had so much fun!

“I’ve always gone over and above with themed events. It started with the invitation and went through the event itself. We found that the further we went with the theme (costumes and such), the more it drove participation. Our guests loved it!”

    Host party
My host at Caesars had a party for his 40th about 5 years ago. It was at the Italian restaurant at Paris. There was a huge cake, give aways (free play) and no real theme except birthday. I was very lucky, and I won the top prize, $5000 in free play. I had to use it up that night and Sunday. My wife and I were scrambling at the VP machines to run it through, as it expired the next Monday. We got even luckier, I hit a RF, some Aces with kickers, and the wife hit Aces twice on Aces Bonus. By the time we were done Sunday afternoon, we turned it in to over $10K with all the associated W2G's. Cannot wait till he turns 50!
