Question of the Day - 21 July 2022

Q:

I am a hot and sour soup fanatic. I will try anything recommended. What is the best in Vegas in your opinion?

A:

We're not fanatics, so we can't in all good conscience identify the best in Vegas.

But we too like hot and sour soup, which is made with Chinese chicken stock and water, then cooked with some combination of pork, mushrooms, tofu, bamboo shoots, usually an egg, oil (toasted sesame is preferred), ginger, red chile paste, soy sauce, vinegar, a bit of cornstarch as a thickener, and chopped chives and cilantro as garnish.

Generally, our go-to place for H&S soup is Ping Pang Pong at the Gold Coast. It's right around the corner from our office, so it's very convenient, and it's open till 3 a.m. Mon.-Saturday, so it's a great late-night play for a hearty bowl.

We also like the H&S at China Poblano, a José Andrés eatery at the Cosmo.

And the H&S at Lotus of Siam has more of a Thai than Chinese flair, but boy, is it good.

We haven't tried it, but we hear the H&S at Mott 32, an upscale Chinese restaurant at the Venetian, is worth going for.

What say y'all? Got a favorite hot and sour soup in Las Vegas?

    Former best
My favorite, by far, was the hot & sour at Diamond China on Sahara, but they're now closed. Haven't been able to find one that stacks up. Non-gloopy is the key. Rare.

    Ridiculous question
This site (claims) they receive a LOT of questions (they had this as a QoD). Yet, they answer ridiculous questions like this and like could you bet on the Super Bowl in 1970 in Vegas, whilst ignoring meaningful questions like how does Vegas compare with Macau and Monacco.

Sad to say, this site is turning into trash.

    Ping Pang Pong
Hubby and I went to PPP and the meal(we tried many dishes) was barely edible. Had some soup, but not the H&S. Really a disappointment based on the reviews we read, and unfortunately based our visit on.

    Chinatown?
Considering Las Vegas has a Chinatown area, I am surprised there isn't one good H&S soup recommendation from there. As for Sally_Ann, what do you really think?

All the water Las Vegas would ever need. Not a joke.
I know a way that Las Vegas can get all the water we'll ever need. Is there any way that my idea could get the attention it would take for my idea to become a reality? Anyone I emailed has not responded.
