Question of the Day - 11 April 2025

Q:

We stayed for the weekend at the Downtown Grand and did not receive housekeeping services. Come to find out they don't provide daily housekeeping. I thought it was Nevada law or a Culinary Union rule that housekeeping had to be provided. Any insights?

A:

Typically, according to the Grand’s front desk, rooms are cleaned every three days. If you have special requests (other than a full room cleaning), you're encouraged to call the front desk for towels, bottles of water, etc.

Nevada law makes no provision for the minimum number of room cleanings. Such a decree was enacted during the pandemic, which mandated daily room cleanings. However, when COVID eased its grip, the Nevada Legislature rescinded it.

In the past month, a state senator made a valiant attempt to bring back daily room cleanings. However, her effort was thwarted when Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo indicated he would veto such a bill if it passed.

We couldn’t reach the senator, but Culinary spokeswoman Bethany Khan told us that the union's contract with the Downtown Grand mandates that rooms be cleaned every day, not every three days.

Culinary Secretary Ted Papageorge followed up in an e-mail to LVA. “The Downtown Grand contract that was won last year does require daily room cleaning. But the reality is this: Because the Nevada Legislature agreed to strip daily room cleaning from state law in 2023, enforcing this standard has become a constant challenge."

    Another fee coming soon
Hotels added parking and resort fees as another way to take our money. They will probably institute a mandatory housekeeping fee in the near future.

    room cleaning
I usually put the do not disturb sign on my door when I check in, and don't remove it until I leave. I don't need my room cleaned, nor do I want anyone in there with my valuables, whether I'm in the room or not. If I need a towel or something else it is always attainable.

    Colletive Bargaining AGgreement
Seems to me if the DT Grand was foolish enough to agree to daily cleaning in the contract, the Union should file a greivance every day until they either follow the agreement or come back to the table to bargain.

    housekeeping
at Excalibur they do daily but it would be easier if you could just schedule it, I don't really need it but maybe once per trip.

What about the daily check of each room
After the Mandalay Bay shooting, didn't they make it a law that each hotel room needs to be checked at least once every 24 hours? They'll come in to check a room but they won't come in to clean it? I know that checking a room doesn't take as much time but while the can kill 2 birds with one stone.

    don't need it.
they should only clean your room when you ask for it. waste of time and money to clen every day. sounds like another stupid union rule.

    DT Grand
We ran into this issue last year. I tip well and simply asked the front desk for housekeeping to neat up the bedding daily. They acted like I was asking for the moon. I use the LVA coupon. Since Andrew O left everything changed. We will never stay there again. Back to the Golden Nugget.

    Housekeeping
I like new towels and bed made. And they tidy up the bathroom. Not sure if they vacuum. And they empty waste cans. While I’m not a messy person, a cleaned up room only makes sense to me.

    Room checks
I thought I had read that, since the Mandalay Bay shooting, rooms must be *checked* - not cleaned - every three days. The reason is to make sure that no one is accumulating large numbers of firearms or other weapons that can be used in a mass killing.

Don't need it, put sign up and it won't be cleaned. Not a stupid union rule to project jobs...

it should be the guests choice
Some people like daily cleaning, some people don't want any. Fair enough. As the paying guest I should be able to request daily cleaning if I want.
