Question of the Day - 04 January 2020

Q:

Is the agriculture checkpoint on I-15 open 24 hours a day? We'll be travelling from Las Vegas to Nipton, CA, at around 7 pm on a Sunday night and we're just wondering if would be best to take the 95 to Nipton to avoid any traffic issues on the I-15. Or will traffic be a non-issue at that time regardless of the checkpoint?

A:

Yes, the California ag checkpoint a few miles southwest of Primm on I-15 is open 24 hours a day.

And yes, at 7 p.m. on a Sunday night on 1-15 westbound, the checkpoint will definitely be a factor in the amount of traffic. In fact, that's perhaps the worst time of the week to be driving toward Los Angeles from Las Vegas.

Taking I-15 to Nipton is a 65-mile journey and ordinarily around an hour. Via US 95, it's 80 miles and 75 minutes. But on a Sunday night, I-15 could be backed up all the way to Primm and even closer to Las Vegas. We say, why take the chance of sitting in all that traffic when you can breeze down 95 and cut over to Nipton through the back door? Typically, it's only 15 minutes longer. In traffic, you could save an hour or more.

Should we take I-15 or US 95 to Nipton, California on a Sunday evening?

Did somebody tell Raiders fans this?
A Sunday home game won't end before 4 PM, and I have a feeling they're not going to close the checkpoint on Raiders home game days

    Map?
Why is the map showing only the Vegas area (with the beltway highlighted) instead of the area that people would be driving?

    Map Apps
With today's technology, mapping it on any map app or even online on a Sunday at the time they are leaving would yield a pretty good estimate as long as they aren't traveling on a holiday weekend.

    7pm Sunday on I-15 W
The presence of the agricultural checkpoint is actually secondary to the mere fact that going from Vegas to L.A. on a Sunday evening is like being in a slowly-moving parking lot, which is because almost everybody from So. Cal. who spends a weekend in Vegas leaves Vegas right after dinner on Sunday. It's an incredible waste of time that always puts you home after midnight. When I had a car, I would either leave Vegas by 2pm or else I would take 95 south to pick up I-40. For the life of me, I don't know why they haven't made the entire stretch of I-15 between L.A. and Vegas be 4 lanes in each direction. More people would prefer spending money on such a project than on a maglev train. So, yes, it would be much quicker to get to Nipton by taking the 95.
