Question of the Day - 23 August 2023

Q:

Identity Points at the Cosmopolitan will be absorbed into the MGM program February 1, 2024. Notices just came out. How will this affect loyal Cosmo customers? I assume we will get killed and be looking for a new place to stay.

A:

As Jean Scott, long-time and astute observer of the slot/players club scene in Las Vegas and elsewhere, often says, "Whenever changes are made in players clubs, they're almost always worse for the players."

And we've often noticed that there's an inverse proportion: The more breathless the press releases and announcements of changes in players club benefits, the less they actually benefit the players.

At the Nevada Gaming Control Board meeting where the changeover was discussed, MGM's chief commercial officer told the Board, "The Cosmopolitan will add an entirely new set of ways for gaming and non-gaming customers to enjoy all the moments MGM Resorts and Las Vegas have to offer."

Not too bad hype-wise, though the lack of specifics is a bit worrying.

He also said that Identity members will retain their offers and benefits through January 31 and all Identity points will carry over to their membership with MGM Rewards.

That's a given, or at least it should be.

All in all, it looks to us like the usual transition, with a commensurate slide in benefits.

Is it too early to tell? Perhaps. But just yesterday, we reported in Vegas News that starting on September 20, people staying at the Cosmo will have to pay for self-parking. The Cosmo didn't start charging for self-parking until June 2021, but even then, guests parked for free. Now that MGM has taken over operations, that comp dog won't hunt. And it certainly doesn't bode well for changes in the players club.

We'll all have to see where everything stands come February 2. But if it's business as usual for MGM Resorts, we'll be experiencing Groundhog Day all over again.

    movie quote
A line from Esther Rolle ("Idella") in Driving Miss Daisy stuck with me for some reason. After Miss Daisy wrecked her car, her son (Dan Aykroid) hired "Hoke" (Morgan Freeman) to do her driving. She hated this as it represented her loss of independence, etc., didn't want Hoke around doing anything for her, especially the driving.

On this morning she noticed one can of mackerel missing from her panty. She made a frantic call to her son; Hoke was 'stealing' from her! About the time the son arrived at Daisy's house, Hoke and Idella arrived a minute later. Sensing the beginning of trouble, Hoke said to Idella in a whispered tone "I wonder what's going on?" Idella said "It can't be good, I promise you that."

Having been through several of these 'wonderful' casino comp changes, that is my mantra: "It can't be good, I promise you that."

Entirely new set of ways to enjoy...
"The Cosmopolitan will add an entirely new set of ways for gaming and non-gaming customers to enjoy all the moments MGM Resorts and Las Vegas have to offer."

Translation - Platinum members will be able to use the restroom in their hotel room without a bathroom access fee.

Don't leave us who never saw the movie hanging. Where did the can of mackerel go? Who took it? Perhaps the cat?

  • Kevin Lewis Aug-23-2023
Gee, I just had a Cosmogasm
The chances of my ever setting foot in the Cosmo have just dropped from 0 to 0.

    for Sandra Ritter
You never saw "Driving Miss Daisy"?

Hoke tried every way to gain her acceptance, including doing extra chores around the house, clean lamps, etc. pulled weeds from her yard/garden, etc. She wouldn't have it, would tell him to stop.

The morning she found the can of mackerel missing, suspecting Hoke had taken it, she called her son in a furious panic. He rushed over, and while she was ranting to him about being 'robbed' by Hoke, in walked Hoke (and Idella).

Hoke proceeded to pull a new can of mackerel out of his bags, telling her (ever so politely) "Here is a can of mackerel I just bought to pay you back. I didn't have a chance to to tell you, I opened a new one yesterday for lunch. The last one [leftover] was becoming a little stiff."

Miss Daisy didn't apologize (and BTW she was wealthy), but that became the start of her trusting Hoke and the friendship that developed between them over the rest of their lives. Funny and touching movie.

    To Sandra Ritter:
Here's a link to a YouTube clip of Miss Daisy and the missing can. The disappearance is explained and the scene has a happy ending--sort of.

To O2bnVegas: It was a can of salmon, not mackerel.

To Kevin Lewis: I'm with you. I've set foot in Cosmo exactly once, the week they opened; came out with every cent I went in with; and haven't felt any urge to return. Like the rest of Las Vegas, they have my permission to run their company as they see fit, and to proceed to the infernal regions after their own fashion. But they seem to be doing that just fine anyway, with or without permission.

And finally to everybody at LVA, especially the QOD commentators: I've enjoyed the interaction and camaraderie on this site for years, but after much soul-searching I won't be joining you behind the impending paywall, at least for the present. If the parting is too painful I'll be back, credit card in hand.

Cheers and best wishes to all.

    Points "Changes" for ANYTHING...
Including but not limited to casinos, hotels, airlines, et al are BAD for the consumer at least 99.99% of the time and I'm giving them a "maybe" for the remaining 00.01% of the time....

    Apologies to Mackerel
A guy I worked with often brought mackerel to heat up for lunch in our break room. Ick!!!! Awful smell, to most of us anyway. I guess that's why I made that wrong association. Sorry! Still a wonderful movie.

Don't mess with a good thing
The Identity Membership program at Cosmopolitan offers a lot of benefits that MGM Rewards doesn't. That is why it is always pretty crowded there and patrons enjoy it so much. MGM should realize this and not change the good things that have served to make Cosmopolitan the great place that it is.

    same old same old
big company takes over a casino and start reducing the benefits. Increased table limits, overpriced food etc, etc. Maybe it's time for a Bud Light approach to Las Vegas and see what happens
