Question of the Day - 23 June 2024

Q:

We're coming in from New Hampshire and one of the people in our group says that his first stop will be In N Out Burger, which he raves about and can't wait to get to once he arrives. My wife and I have never had In N Out and we'd like to try it, but we won't have a car and might need to take a cab. What's the closest branch to Planet Hollywood?

A:

Ah, In N Out.

It's hard to believe today, but there was a time when Las Vegas didn't have any In N Out locations. The first arrived in 1992, the one at the corner of W. Tropicana Avenue and Dean Martin Drive just across 1-15 from New York- New York. This restaurant also has a retail location next door, open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, offering shirts, caps, jackets, and other In-N-Out merchandise.

Since then, 12 more locations have opened; out of 417 branches in 275 cities in seven states, Las Vegas has the most of any city at 13.

Luckily for you, there's one within walking distance of Planet Hollywood. In fact, it's only 10 minutes on foot. You walk north, cross Flamingo, pass the Cromwell and Flamingo, then turn into the LINQ Promenade. It's about halfway to the High Roller observation wheel on the right.

Enjoy! We always do -- more so than Five Guys, Whataburger, Shake Shack, Fatburger, Sonic, and the others, though we recently ate at a Freddy's Steakburger for the first time (in Phoenix) and thought it gave In N Out a run for its money, at least in the burger department.

    However...
The one inside the LINQ Promenade is about twice as expensive as a regular In N Out. But then, everything on the Strip is twice as expensive as its counterpart in the physical world. I would go to the one that's spitting distance from UNLV. Take the Flamingo bus.

I'm not quite sure what all the hoopla is about, since it isn't the best burger I've ever had, or even the fifteenth best, but you do get a good balance of price and quality--plus, the service there is excellently cheerful, in an almost creepy American Graffiti meets Stepford Wives way.

    Do it the LVA way
Use a coupon. Another option: the Southpoint has a Stake 'N Shake.

    Really?
Kevin Says, "I would go to the one that's spitting distance from UNLV. Take the Flamingo bus."? So I walk to the Flamingo bus stop, buy a 2 hour bus pass $6, wait 7 min for the bus, 10-15 min bus ride to Sandhill (much past UNLV) cross flamingo to In N Out, eat lunch, back to the bus stop, wait for the next bus, another 10-15 min bus ride back to my starting point! and I saved how much?
To the original Questioner: Go to the one at the LINQ. 45 min strolling around the LINQ promenade is much more pleasant than riding the RTC Bus! IMHO

    Not Bad to a Visitor
I'm from Chicago with higher prices so perhaps that's why I never thought the prices there were high. Go anywhere else in the Linq Promenade and I feel they're higher. But the main reason I'm writing is to tell the person to ask for their burger Animal Style. To me that's what makes it unique. I don't do that for the fries but I hear you can. It's a special sauce that they use.

    In N Out
Easily, without a doubt in my tiny mind, the worst fast food burger on the planet. And the fries! Soggy, limp and greasy. Yum!

  • Kevin Rough Jun-23-2024
I've never had a good experience at the Linq
The In-N-Out at the Linq is probably the worst one I've been to. Overpriced, the food is slightly off, and there is nowhere to sit since its overrun with tourists.

Dean Martin and Tropicana is always busy but it has better seating than the Linq. It's just over the freeway from NYNY. My favorite is Sahara near Palace Station as it's not overrun with tourists yet not that far away.

ever hear of UBER ? OR LYFT?,U MUST HAVE $$.STAY OFF THE STRIP - GOUGHING is their middle name , resort fees , parking fees , exorbitant food prices , stay downtown . table prices are reasonable , not $50-$100 per bj hand . try white castle on corner across from the D, OR THE CONEY DOG AT THE AMERICAN CONEY ISLAND IN THE 'D'.$4.50. is the SENATOR FOOTING THE BILL ?

  • Randall Ward Jun-23-2024
    burgers
it's OK, but I'd skip the Linq one. Strip fast food is too $$ and just varies too much. Except for Raiing Canes and Chik Fila,

    DON'T BOTHER....
    It's nothing special to me.

    1994
We stopped and ate at the first one on Dean Martin back in 1994, after my best friend's bachelor party. Was the first In N Out I had ever eaten at. A blast from the past with this QOD.

  • Darrell Thimlar Jun-23-2024
    Mr
Tropicana and Dean Martin is the busiest In an Out in the country but always good. Last time I was in Vegas w ate at the Ling I&O. Was good and did not notice higher prices but that was 4 years ago. Also like the one near pPalace station, not busy. Getting I/o tomorrow In Tuscon.Yumm

    Habit or Smash
I have done the In N Out burger and gonna say they are good late night if you’ve had a few drinks. Gonna say Habit Burger and Smashburger are both better. Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder so to speak.

    I-n-O
Part of the In-n-Out experience is watching the process, potatoes being cut seconds before they are put in the fryer... No frozen bag of engineered 'food' products being dumped into the fryer by a disinterested high-school kid. There is a whole language for In-n-Out, animal style, mustard fried, protein style, etc. You can find it on the internet. I prefer my burger 'animal style', and fries 'well' for a little crispier fry.

  • Marcus Leath Jun-23-2024
    Yuk
In N Out is awful; no taste, pathetic fries. I live in southern CA and for the life of me I cannot understand the fascination some have with this fast food. I have tried it several times trying to find what on earth I am missing, but what I have found is that most people do not have good sense or taste. Five Guys is superior in every way, as is Steak N' Shake. Those two are the best if burgers and fries are your aim.

  • dblund Jun-23-2024
    Once again proving...
...you aren't going to satisfy everyone, especially when it comes to taste. If you haven't tried In N Out yet, I'd certainly suggest you give it a try. You might just find that you love the place like so many others do.

At worst, even at the Linq location, you'll have a meal at a relatively reasonable price, and at best you might insist on going back again before the trip is over.

  • Jeffrey Small Jun-23-2024
    No so great...
As an East Coast person I heard about In N Out. Expecting a great product. On the occasions that I went to the chain I have not been impressed. Not sure what the fuss is about. I think there are better burgers at either the Habit or Mooyah. Both have locations in LAS. The Habit is located near the corner of Flamingo and Paradise, which would be walkable from your hotel or you could go to their location at the Fashion Show Mall. (They also do grilled Tuna and Chicken, both very good.). Or take an Uber to Mooyah on Durango. Excellent large burgers. I think you will conclude that both have a better product than In N and Out.

  • Thomas Hebel Jun-23-2024
    Wrong
The fist In N Out was on Sahara
The One you references was the 3rd in LAS

Skip the fries -- you've been warned!
Enjoy your burger at In-N-Out. It's a solid fast-food burger for the price, even at The LINQ. (Not as good as, say, Five Guys or The Habit, but still quite good and somewhat less pricey.) But whatever you do, don't order the fries.

In-N-Out serves the absolute worst fries of any fast-food chain, and there's not even a close second. Hardcore In-N-Out partisans will point out that the fries are cut fresh in-store from whole potatoes. How they're made is irrelevant; the experience of eating them is miserable, in terms of both flavor (cardboard) and texture (weird).

If you're hungry, order a second burger instead, and spare yourself the disappointment of In-N-Out's sorry excuse for fries.

  • Candace Corbani Jun-23-2024
    Order Crisp Fries
The french fries only get one trip to the fryer unless you order them "Crisp" from this chain.

    You Really FEEL Cheated ...
Stayed at the LINQ in May 2024 in a room with a senior discounted price of $8/$9 (with fees and taxes about $62/night for three nights). Having traveled form Orlando Florida over 1000 miles away about $600/night for 17 nights. Bought one Disney burger form Connections at EPCOT (only one for the entire stay of 17 nights). Menu was American Classic Burger with fries plus coconut shake. Seemed it was $23 or so with tax. Menu used to say 1/3 lbs burger no longer. Burger was "cooked several hours before" and rewarmed (not all the way ... served coldish). Fries where cruddy and slightly warm. Shake seemed to separate over time.
In-N-Out double cheeseburger fries and strawberry MILK-shake. Cost about $12/$13 with tax. Everything was fresh and hot and delicious. The next day traveled 940 miles home with a smile.
As for the "hoopla!" I travel here, I travel there swimming with my hand like a salmon swimming to and fro up the stream looking for the kungaloosh S.E.A.
