Question of the Day - 24 November 2021

Q:

Is there an app that tells when a slot machine is going to pay off?

A:

Today's question is so engaging on so many levels that for the first time ever in Question of the Day's long and colorful history, we're throwing this one out to the readership to answer.

It reminds us of our favorite feature in The New Yorker magazine. On the last page of every issue, they publish a cartoon and ask readers to furnish the caption. Every week, it amazes us how clever people can be.

We look forward to reading all the clever -- pithy, piquant, penetrating -- responses to this question that all you out there in QoDland can come up with.

    Yes indeed!
It's called the Android Slot Swami and can be downloaded to your phone. Just walk into any casino, turn it on, and it will indeed tell you, "A slot machine is about to pay off!"

It won't tell you which one, however. For that, you have to upload $1000 in cryptocurrency to the owners of the app. And you'd better hurry, because someone else might hit that jackpot while you're obtaining that vital info.

Really? This was a real question? But on the assumption that it was...

It should be taken as a wake-up call to the LVA staff that some of the readers are not the sharpest tools in the shed.

Far too often, the QoD answer assumes a certain level of Vegas or casino knowledge. This question clearly indicates a lack of that level.

    Starters
Obviously this question comes from a new reader, gambler and LVA reader. This is how it all starts and I hope this person reads LVA and all its resources. Young people think there is an app for everything. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

    Yes
You don't even need an app - if you think about it the slots pay off almost every time. Just not to you.

  • Randall Ward Nov-24-2021
    slot app
    only on iPhone, no Android.

  • Bob Nelson Nov-24-2021
    Easy enough
Yes, it is the app the casino slot machine technicians use that tell them the next machine that needs to be emptied because it is almost full of cash.

    There could be.....
Slots are a computer. The payouts are based off a RNG - Random Number Generator. The truth is that with a computer random is not random. Typically a RNG is seeded with a number and if you are aware of that number the sequence is both predictable and repeatable. To eliminate the predictability they typically seed the RNG with a ever changing number such as the last 4 microseconds of the computer clock. So even if you were aware of the seed number and could predict the next "random" outcome the time (and such the seed) is changing so quickly you could not hit the spin button at the just right interval to pull off the win. Generally speaking the slot itself is not connected to the internet or other casino system - player tracking yes, progressive Yes but not the slots itself. So another element of randomness is that the internal clock didn't start until the machine was turned on.

    To be continued.....

Works well most of the time
There are a couple of astrology apps that have worked very well for me at casinos and on the lottery. Fortune cookies work well also if you know how to interpret them.

    Sure Is!
    It's named URNIDEEUHT.

    There could be part II
Now if you were a slot developer and had the RNG algorithm you could write an APP that would take the results of your last 4 spins. This would allow the app to sync its prediction model with the clock that the slot is using, and be able to predict the next sequences of outcomes. Again the clock is moving so fast - the app would be able to show all future outcomes - assuming you hit the spin button at just the right time. So if you see it coming up and hit the button at just the right time - you win... but by the time you saw the combination that would win you the big one it would be past.

Now if you could integrate a slapper device to the smart phone it would be able to slap the button at just the right time to generate the win of your choice. Again you would have to stand there until the right combination comes up but you wouldn't have to put much money in the slot to generate the outcome.

    There could be III
Now getting to the heart of the question - Which Slot is going to win. You could get an army of smart phones, each running the app and because the smart phones connect over the internet and communicate with each other, this generates the possibility that you could broadcast this information to all the app users in the casino that machine #12 has a winning combination coming up in 15min and head over to machine #12 and be ready to slap the button.....or install your slapper device...

    There is an app
It's called "Follow Me". You log in, the app tells you where I am. All you have to do is find me and wait for me to get off of the machine I'm currently on. That machine will hit within two minutes.

    RNGs
I am sure there are a number of people that understand how random number generators work here. It just really isn’t relevant. After the initial seed is fed into the RNG any properly programmed gambling machine is going to be generating random numbers constantly while the machine is waiting for the next play to start. That will be happening millions of times per second and there is no way you are A) going to figure out where in the sequence the machine is and B) even if you could you would not be able to press a mechanical switch accurately enough to choose any given number. The same goes for the mentioned mechanical “slapper”. Involving a second inaccurate mechanical device operating another inaccurate mechanical device would just make it worse. Also thanks to the successful use of blackjack computers of the late 70s/early 80s using any such device in a casino (in Nevada for sure) will get you a felony conviction.

    Press Your Luck Scandal
Google the story of a mastermind who studied and exploited the weaknesses of the early computer systems and their random sequencing codes. This guy got on the show and made out with about 100K in the early 80's. CBS was worried about the show afterwards and tried to deny the guy his payout. It's a fascinating story with great commentary from the late great host, Peter Tarkenian.

    To Jerry Patey
    Jerry,

Yes, in the medical world QOD means "every other day", as in "give this medicine every other day", which you well know.

In Las Vegas Advisor, QoD means Question of the Day, abbreviated to QoD (lower case "o"). The above is a QoD from a reader, and for this one we are given the opportunity to suggest an answer. That's all.

Of course every slot you've fed comes up a jackpot for the next person to sit down at "your" machine. Happens to me all the time too. :D

    Click Bait
This question is probably a result of click bait on a lot of slimy websites. There's of a picture of a well endowed woman trying to plug something into the side of a slot machine, with a caption that casinos don't want you to have this. When you click on it, it leads you to an online gambling site.

  • Kevin Rough Nov-24-2021
    The ATM
The only machine in the casino guaranteed to pay out is called ATM. They all look slightly different. You don't use your regular players card, you use your debit card instead. Insert that card and enter your PIN number. Enter the amount of money you wish to withdr...I mean win. As long as you have at least that much money in your checking account, the money comes out the front. It's a win.

    What a timely question!
As it happens, development on my new app is in final testing, and I'm now working with savvy investors to help get this off the ground. If you're interested...

    @Bob N
Bob, If you had the algorithm and enough sample plays to get the sequence you could sync to the algorithm as there is truly no random number and you would have to be perfectly in sync with the time (assuming that is the seed). Where this falls down is that your phone etc, might not have a fast enough processor to emulate the one in the slot as mobile devices tend to be low power and slower processing.

You are however right on the money that a mechanical slapper, slapping another mechanical button would be highly imperfect. Ultimately you would want to remove the button and connect your device directly to the two wires that make the button work and even if you got all the above stuff right (and thats a huge if) hotwiring is just not going to happen. Furthermore there are a lot of different manufacturers in the casino and a Bally, IGT, WMS are all going to have different processors not to mention different revisions of software, all just hypothetical fun - thanks for engaging !!
