Question of the Day - 25 March 2026

Q:

What can you tell us about Jackpot, the cat at Longstreet casino in Amargosa Valley. I was there a couple of years ago and here he came walking on the bar right past us. He ended up falling asleep on the video poker machine right next to me. Also what would happen if he accidentally hit the deal button before you could hold your dealt royal flush?

A:

Ah. Yes. This is a good one for cat lovers such as ourselves.

Jackpot is the resident mascot cat at the Longstreet Inn, Casino & RV Resort between Amargosa Valley and Death Valley Junction on NV 373 right at the California state line.

He's a well-known and beloved fixture there, frequently mentioned by visitors in reviews and social media posts. People describe him as a cute cat with an affectionate laid-back personality who freely roams the casino, hangs out near the bar and slot machines, visits with guests, and even has his own reserved spots (a bed near windows or a table in the showroom). There's a popular superstition that petting him brings good luck — many guests make a point of seeking him out and petting him for that reason.

Jackpot is definitely part of what makes the Longstreet Inn, owned by Jim Marsh of Las Vegas car-dealership fame (whom we profiled in this Question of the Day), quirky and memorable and you can read a cool and comprehensive story about the joint, including a couple of closeup photos of Jackpot, in a WanderingHedonist post from 2021.

    Age?
    How old is Jackpot?

I'm told 10 years is normal for a cat to live; my Albert is 18. I know 18 isn't a record, but Albert also has diabetes, gets an insulin shot (by me!) twice a day. Just curious (by nature as a cat lover, I suppose).

Last August we had to send our little Melody to the Rainbow Bridge. She would have been 22 years old in November. We got her from a local rescue when she was 15. Thought we would give her a good year or two. She sure fooled us. In a good way. 🙂

    Cat won't hurt your royal
Often, when dealt a royal, the cards are automatically held. So you don't mistakenly throw them away. The 🐈 isn't going to cost you that royal.

Thanks, Llew. Wow, 22 years old, your Melody! I dread that day. My husband and I took him in (I guess you could say we rescued him) after his long time owner, a church member, 101 yrs old, passed away. A plea went out, somebody please take Albert. Nobody responded. More pleas, nothing. Hubby always said he 'hated' cats, but then he's the one who said "Maybe we ought to take that cat." They became besties instantly. I hope I just find him having "died peacefully", as they say.
