Question of the Day - 01 December 2018

Q:

How about an update on the Jockey Club?

A:

Well, there’s no big news to report about the 214-unit timeshare between Bellagio and the Cosmo and we don’t expect there to be in the foreseeable future.

The big changes at the Jockey Club took place between eight and ten years ago, after it sold its parking lots to the Cosmopolitan, which was built in a tight U-shape surrounding the two timeshare towers on three sides. That was a dusty, noisy, disruptive period that Jockey Club owners weren’t sorry to see end when the Cosmo opened in December 2010.

Since then, the Jockey Club has undergone several renovations, financed by the money it made from selling most of its real estate. Guest rooms have been upgraded, common areas have been greatly improved, and most recently, the pool deck and fitness center underwent some remodeling.

Jockey Club owners and guests have enjoyed parking in a dedicated area on the third floor of the Cosmopolitan’s underground garage since the megaresort opened eight years ago; elevators connect two floors of the Jockey Club to the third floor of the parking garage, as well as the Cosmo casino. When the Cosmo started charging for parking last year, JC units were exempted. It’s a great play to stay there, park for free, and catch the free CityCenter tram between Bellagio and Park MGM (connecting to Luxor and Mandalay Bay from Excalibur) on the west side of the Strip or the Las Vegas Monorail on the east side of the Strip.

The reason we don’t expect further changes is that there are more than 14,000 owners of timeshare units at the Jockey Club — and they’d all have to agree to sell in order for that valuable, though greatly shrunken, space to be transformed in any way.

We went to a Jockey Club presentation in 1986....
but didn't bite. I would say it was one of my better decisions, but we never actually considered it seriously. In fact, I remember thinking, "What if the Vegas experience morphs into something I don't want to go to any more--do I want to be saddled with something like this?" And that's pretty much what happened, and is still happening, only in slow motion. Did get free tickets to "Legends in Concert," though.
OTOH, from your description it sounds like it might be OK for someone who's into the current Strip scene. I read on the net somewhere about someone who bought a Jockey Club unit on eBay for $1.00 and then paid a couple of hundred more to transfer the title; and IIRC, he said he was enjoying it very much: free parking, no resort fees, etc.
The Debbie Reynolds Hotel was also set up with timeshare units, and it was eventually imploded. Don't have any details about that, but I guess they got enough of them to agree.
