Question of the Day - 06 November 2022

Q:

What percentage does a keno slot machine pay?

A:

[Editor's Note: This question went straight to the Wizard of Odds himself, Michael Shackleford. And by the way, Michael's book, Gambling 102, will be sold out in the next few months and we're adding a new chapter to the reprint. This one's a doozy: It's on slot machine advantage play. And yes, there is such a thing. We'll preview the book on this site when the new chapter is ready. ]

The RTP, which stands for "return to player," on video keno ranges from 85% to 94%, depending on how stingy or liberal the slot director is.  As a general rule, the nicer the casino, the tighter the slots.

Gambling 102 has lists of the RTP for any standard paytable for keno games: spot, Caveman, Cleopatra, Power, Triple Power, and Extra Draw. By checking the lists first, you will know what you're up against before you bet, though in the end, all keno machines that hold between 6% and 15% are too much to be up against.

    LOL!
Advantage slot play, that's an oxymoron. You can play less volatile slot games, but unless you disable the system to detect slugs, I dunno about advantage slot play. :D

Interesting for machines, but is live keno fair? Anyone know?

Advantage Slot Play a real thing
    Simply put, Roy, you're wrong.

There are a number of slot machines that return 85% or so at reset. Many of these have types of buckets, or progressives, that grow as you play. If you wait until the ploppies play these machines enough so that you now have an advantage, you can make good money playing slots.

The 'trick' is to know when to play and when to get off. And you can bet there is a lot of competition for these machines. Still, I play more hours on slots these days than I do on video poker. And I'm not losing!

Roy, think of the children's fable Hansel and Gretel. Do you remember the bread crumbs? Well AP players are the birds that eat the bread crumbs. Some slot machines have a game within the base game and that game may not be obvious to the casual player.
