Question of the Day - 06 June 2023

Q:

Who is Kevin Lewis? Is he just a fan of Las Vegas Advisor like I am? He seems to make educated comments on your site very often!

A:

Kevin Lewis, a frequent commenter on QoD pages and LVA Forums, was an advantage player in the late '80s and all of the '90s: first blackjack, then video poker. He lived in Las Vegas for most of that time.

In 2005, when he perceived that advantage play was drying up (especially video poker), the housing market in Vegas (and everywhere else) was about to implode, and a recession was imminent, Kevin sold his house and left. All his premonitions came to pass, unfortunately.

Kevin is now a seasonal visitor to, rather than a resident of, Vegas.

If he seems negative at times about the current state of Sin City affairs, it's because he's one of the many Vegasphiles who misses the days when this was a fantastic place to live, visit, and make a living. It's no secret that he believes Vegas has turned into one giant ripoff.

However, he also says, "The skills I learned during my advantage-play years can still be used to sniff out bargains and make my time in Vegas essentially free of charge. LVA definitely helps with that!"

Kevin often sprinkles politics into his comments and he's unapologetic about them.

"I believe in universal health care, aggressive initiatives to mitigate climate change, and a restructuring of the system to address rampant economic inequality. (And yeah, I loathe Trump, but who doesn't?) That makes me a moderate on most of the West Coast, but a flaming leftist in Vegas, which is yet another reason why I no longer live there. But I still like to go to buffets, few and far between though they may be."

    Still Fabulous, if....
you put the time into research and scouting to enjoy limited time in Las Vegas.

The 2024 LVA Coupon book is part of that research for the NAB Conference in April. The Downtown Grand hotel coupon is a smash deal, along with the $50 match bet? With a rental car and a few hours, I'll hit at least 14 of those free bet places, exploring new stops and adventures only LV can provide. Trump is slimy and chauvinistic. But man, was is it easy to increase wealth and make $$$$$$ during the first 2.5-3 years of his run. If you vote for Trump, that has to be a colossal motivating factor.

    HEY KEVIN
WHY WAS THERE NO FUSS MADE OVER PHILLIS MCQUIRE'S DEATH. SHE WAS THE LAST SURVIVING MCQUIRE SISTER WHO WERE THE # 1 VEGAS SHOW IN THE 50'S AND PRE-RAT PACK DAYS AS YOU KNOW. LVA WON'T ANSWER. SHOULDN'T THEY AT LEAST HAVE A ROAD NAMED AFTER THEM? I TOO MISS THE "GOOD OLD DAYS."

    President Trump, Great Man
Kevin, as a Floridian & 4th gen Californian, I can strongly say, that President Trump is great man and savior of our nation. The combined "deep state & financial actors" which have strived to destroy him, show the state of our current society. The merger between the media, banking, & the military industrial complex, is truly scary. We only live in a two party state, by a slim thread; based on brave men such as Elon Musk & Donald Trump. If I wanted a one-party dictatorship, I would live in California or Hawaii. What has happened in the past three decades in my home state, is tragic. At least Nevada, still is, but you never know; just look at the electoral corruption of Arizona, next door.

    Another Trump Lemming
[email protected] is the perfect example of why Universal Health Care MUST include comprehensive mental heath coverage.

    Attaboy Kevin!
Grateful for Kevin's words and his commitment to something other than self. I guess I miss some of the "old days," but I have to say that this year, I am getting offers again for the first time in at least five years from the El Cortez and Four Queens, where we have most of our (limited) play. The LVA coupons, the great advice here, and an aversion to the Strip mean we still have a fine old time in Sin City without breaking the bank.

    I, for one …
have enjoyed Kevin’s curmudgeonly wit and commentaries.
Yes, his posts have occasionally been wacky musings, but consider that, unlike other players, such as Bob Prancer (not his real name — he must remain protected at all costs!), Kevin freely shared information about the best available keno with fellow LVA readers.
So, damn the torpedoes! Keep writing, Kevin.
There are still people who appreciate off-beat humor and pointed insights. A wealth of information is a wealth best shared.

    Wow
Kevin often sprinkles politics into his comments.

We need to look up the definition of "sprinkles" I guess but this explains a lot as to why LVA lets him run rampant all over the forum.....

  • Kevin Lewis Jun-06-2023
    Thanks everyone
...for all the kind words as well as the unhinged babbling from those whose bolts aren't torqued down. It's all good :)

  • Doc H Jun-06-2023
    'sprinkles'?
Oh sure, 'sprinkles'. I think it's obvious to many including myself the guy is an unhinged azz on the far left loony wagon and ultra bitter about it on this forum that should have zero to do with politics. Though glad to hear he's not voting in Nevada anymore to mess up a somewhat balanced/moderate state where there's some checks and balances in the corrupt game of politics. Good he's probably living in some far left lunatic state with a super majority that's our way or no way rule that has wonderful things like rampant homelessness, legislates stealing from stores a misdemeanor, ruined once great cities where major stores can't even stay in business have to close, let everyone anyone into our nation without vetting them for votes and clearly in no small words sends a message to those who play by the rules to immigrate legally 'suckers', gives 'free' health care to these types for free over citizens. Great 'progressive' stuff. But good thing lewis cares about 'rampant inequality'. Yep.

'perfect example of why Universal Health Care MUST include comprehensive mental heath coverage.'

Since we are still obsessed with politics on a gambling forum, I'll play.

Can say the same thing for many people out there, perhaps-probably yourself lenny, who thought putting an demented eggplant in the top power position who appears to not know what planet he's on, tripping over his own feet many times and falling now, can hardly form a sentence, looking like a bumbling fool on the national and world stage that has made us the joke of the world - Seems to me that kind of very, VERY poor judgement requires some serious mental evaluation by your health care system, yes yes?

  • lennylasvegas Jun-06-2023
    Hi "DOC"
Yes, the President occasionally has difficulties talking smoothly - a lingering effect of stuttering that he's had since childhood. Yes, the President has exhibited some problems with physical coordination. Although I'm not 80 and can't speak from personal experience, but I think most 80 year-olds have at least some problems with physical coordination. Does the President make the US the joke of the world? I'm not qualified to say. But I think he does deserve some credit for coordinating the support that the NATO countries and others have demonstrated regarding Ukraine. I also think the US is in a better position when the President isn't supporting foreign dictators like Putin and Kim Jong Un and the fascist policies they advocate, and the fact that Trump wants to emulate (big word, you may have to look it up) them by becoming President for life here in the US. But thanks for taking a break from Faux News and Newsmax to share your thoughts with the rest of us.

    good humor man
I appreciate the Kevin who gives 'man on the street' advice when asked about Vegas food, gaming, hotel/casinos, and history behind these and other establishments.

I don't often delve into the political myself, but I appreciate it when Kevin articulates his views in such a way that I can understand (not necessarily agree, but understand) his thinking. His witicisms, irony, and wordplay (oops, is that one word or two, Kevin?) are entertaining for sure. I'll always think of "Pocket Lint" when the subject is players club tiers.

    ARROGANT
He is an arrogant obnoxious sod who thinks that everyone who has the temerity to disagree with him is wrong. FWIT I agree with him re Trump but a gambling forum is not the place for him to post his political opinions. Re his gambling knowledge ; it used to be good but it is outdated and as mentioned above, he does not think anyone opinions are worth listening to

    Concur with Doc H . . .
. . . and it's my belief that chief among the Left's goals is to rewrite the Constitution to achieve a socialist state.

  • [email protected] Jun-06-2023
    STOP IT!
With ALL the naive babbling about politics on this forum, there are BILLIONS of other forums for that "waste of time" crap. I'm sure I'm not the only one that comes here for Vegas gamblin, eatin and drinkin fun and games info. and not EITHER side of the corrupt political system...

  • Doc H Jun-06-2023

I don't watch 'news' like yourself. I don't favor any political party. All self serving corruption to me. Donors rule both sides, they don't care one iota about you except to gain power. Since we got that out of the way vs your division mentality that 'news' has taught you how to think, let us continue.

But let's keep it simple once again. Last regime - no major wars, rarity in our history. Peace reigned. No inflation. Energy prices low. We were basically self-sufficient. Contrast that to the new regime, just those 3 matters alone. As for ukraine - leftists have turned pro war these days, funding money we don't have to it , $31 trillion in the hole, don't protect our own border, rampant homelessness in big cities, fentanyl pouring in as a result of clowns open border policy, weak feeble leaders cause other nations to start wars, act out like they are doing. As for NK, ever hear the wise saying 'keep your enemies closer' than your friends? I don't think you have. Enjoy your 'news'

  • Doc H Jun-06-2023
I would 100% agree. Normally. But given this QOD is directly about a bumbling angry guy who often uses this forum for political nonsense rants over the years no matter what the QOD is about, if there's a QOD that invites this sort of response, I think it's this one. And frankly relevant.

  • lennylasvegas Jun-06-2023
    Steve, You're right
This should be a forum to discuss gaming, gambling, accommodations, dining, shopping, entertainment, and how to get the best deals to try and tip all of the above somewhat in favor of the player. I should have resisted the urge to add my political commentary to the mix and apologize to all.

  • Raymond Jun-06-2023
    I agree...
...about universal health care, but I have yet to get an adequate answer from my Left friends about how to PAY for it other than "tax the rich". "The rich", as anyone who follows Fauxahontas Warren, Angry Grandpa Bernie, and that crowd knows, means anyone with any money left other than themselves and their friends.

As for climate change, IMO some of it is real, some just another way for politicians and activists to have a soapbox from which to shout.

I don't mind Kevin getting a little political from time to time. His observations about LV make the politics worth reading.

Our immediate Prez a "great man"? Wow. Time to update your meds. I never thought we'd have a worse President in my lifetime than Carter, but Trump...

  • Wilbur Kookmeyer Jun-06-2023
    The dude ain't happy
The guy seems like the typical always negative unhappy liberal. Life's too short to always be pissed at the world and playing the victim. Vegas ain't what it used to be, but there is still money to be made. It just ain't easy money and you have to scout and work. Too me it's more fun finding the edge then spending the money.

  • Lotel Jun-06-2023
    QoD has hit rock bottom
You guys can do a lot better . unless you are just looking for clicks now. like rest of the garbage social media.

  • Tourlite Jun-06-2023
Good question - who is this guy?
As an admitted low roller (asked on a plane how much I'd lost, "3" "3 grand?" "no, 3 dollars") I agree with Kevin's take on the hordes of folks who don't care about value or odds. I also like his take-no-prisoners approach to calling out chicanery whether corporate or political.

  • VegasVic Jun-06-2023
    LOL
Waited awhile to come here to read some of the MAGAt responses. You didn't disappoint.

  • Jeff Waterman Jun-06-2023
    Good times!
I am uncertain if I am scared or encouraged by the crazy comments. One thing is for sure, I am entertained.

  • Doc H Jun-06-2023
    LOL indeed
vegasvic, indeed. Or how about the very few demented eggplant team cheerleaders left who are still blind to reality and have no problem standing by and not criticizing someone who most see as having major cognitive issues, trouble forming sentences(not talking stuttering as another fan of his tried to sell), says bizarre things, shaking hands with the air, looking confused often, etc. And this individual has access to the nuke codes yet his supporters laugh at the other side of the corrupt coin with all knowing arrogance? This is where we are, LOL worth, eh?

Actually, it's frankly beyond frightening to any rational person.

    Mirror time there vegas vic.

  • [email protected] Jun-06-2023
    What's FUNNY...
Is the "geniuses" (on both sides) who spend so much time thinking up names and insults for the other "side," that they do not realize that they ALL are effectively canceling each other out...and in the end NONE of them are going to change anything about either side...or how the federal govt. does anything. Don't believe me? Check out "Art Bell" (RIP) radio archives "Somewhere in Time" and listen to the callers from 30 years ago arguing almost the same exact issues with the same fervor on both sides...

  • Big E Jun-06-2023
    hateful and miserable
Yes, he does have a lot of insight and knowledge about Vegas, but he comes across as a very unhappy and hateful person that I can't appreciate... it's okay if you don't agree with someone's politics, but it isn't necessary to attack them with hateful comments...

  • Kevin Lewis Jun-06-2023
    The MAGA crowd....
...does more here to degrade and insult itself than I ever could.

  • [email protected] Jun-06-2023

    Media influences
The politicians we have in Congress, the White House and Governor mansions are all a reflection of us ordinary voting folks. They wouldn't be there if enough of us didn't vote for them. So when you see a politician that is looney or corrupt or incapable, someone on a crusade, remember that there's a bunch of voting people that agree with what they say and do, plus many more that didn't vote and still support them. That's the way politics is and the media's job is to keep us rev'd-up about it so they can get lots of viewers on tv and internet. More viewers means higher ratings and more money from advertisers. Like a lot of things it comes down to money. Back when we only had 3 tv networks and AM radio we didn't get bombarded with politics 24/7 like we do today. Nowadays everyone gets a daily overdose of what's wrong with the other political party. If you don't think the media has a business interest in all this you're mistaken.

    Congratulations Kevin
Congratulations Kevin on being the topic of your own QOD. There is curiosity about you because of your strong presence here. I look for you comment every day as ,I am sure, others do as well. I acknowledge that you are obviously intelligent and you have a good sense of humor. I don’t usually agree with you, but I have respect for you. Also, your bitterness makes me feel a little better about my life.
As for the people who like to turn this space political most of the time, are you afraid to comment on a real political forum? I mean, this is the LVA QOD. What audience are you trying to impress? People who live in or vacation in Las Vegas? Good luck bringing about world change with that influence.
