Question of the Day - 12 December 2021

Q:

Since their latest merger, Caesars Entertainment has referred to themselves several times as the largest casino company in the U.S. It is obvious they are refraining from saying largest in the world. Who are the largest gaming companies in the world and how big are they?

A:

Using as our criteria the most casino properties, operating 51 casinos in the United States, plus one in Canada, Caesars Entertainment is in fact the biggest casino company in the world. Caesars would be even bigger had it not recently shed all its European and African casinos to Metropolitan Gaming, some 11 gaming houses in total. Had it not done so, its worldwide superiority would probably be unsurpassable.

Second is Casinos Austria, with 40 terrestrial casinos scattered across 16 countries, plus eight on ships and 15 slot parlors. It also recently won the right to develop a casino in Nagasaki prefecture in Japan, quite a feather in its cap.

Third is Penn National Gaming, with 39 casinos and racinos, all domestic, as well as slot routes in Illinois.

The biggest operator in a single market would have to be SJM Holdings, brainchild of the late Stanley Ho. It owns six casinos in Macau and runs nine more.

Good and Bad to be a large company
Being a very large company has some advantages for employees if the company can leverage their size to get lower medical insurance costs, better benefits, employee discounts at other stores, etc. And the larger companies can better attract world class entertainment to their theaters and showrooms. But being a large company often increases the customer's cost in subtle ways, there are not as many comps or good deals since there is less competition between properties. Caesars Entertainment Corp doesn't care if you decide to stay at Bally's instead of Flamingo, they operate both. If most of the Strip resorts are owned or operated by only two corporations then they can setup customer costs so there is little advantage in shopping around. Things like resort fees, hotel rooms, restaurant meals can all increase in lockstep. For the customer like us it would be better if there were more independently owned resorts and they were all vying to lure customers to their place.

    Gaming Co
Maybe this is a different question I wasn't thinking of casino co when I read the question I was thinking of game producer such as IGT and shuffle master and the various other game producers
